A firewall is a hardware or software solution that restricts access to network resources. It's like a locked door — only allowing those with the key (or user profile and password) to enter. Firewall technology creates a protective layer between the network and the outside world, and has filters that can disallow unauthorized or potentially dangerous material from entering the system. It will also log intrusion attempts and alert network managers.

When you're comparing security solution prices, be sure to look at ongoing maintenance costs as well as the initial investment. With Cisco Software and Hardware Support, your ongoing costs are covered, which could save you more than US$16,000 every year compared to a competitive software-based Firewall/VPN solution.
