Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE

The Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is the next generation of the Cisco® 5400 Enterprise Network Compute System (ENCS) platforms.

With up to 20 Intel® Xeon® cores, the Catalyst 8300 Series enables you to run combinations of routers, firewalls, other network functions, and applications, all on a single device as guest Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) (in VM or Container form-factor including Kubernetes). With hardware-accelerated processing for crypto traffic, it can support throughputs to meet the demands of your branches and remote offices. Its compact 1-Rack-Unit (1RU) form factor with less than 18-inch depth makes it suitable for deployment in constrained spaces.

The Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE comes with dual redundant and hot-pluggable power supply units to provide a robust, resilient, and reliable networking platform, as you expect from Cisco. You can configure the platform with a variety of memory and storage options to best meet your business requirements.

Overall platform benefits

Branch virtualization

The Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is purpose-built to support the connectivity needs of medium-sized to large branches. With up to 20 Intel Xeon cores, it enables you to run routers, firewalls, other network functions, and applications, all on a single device as guest VNFs (in VM or container form-factor including Kubernetes), and meet the throughput demands of your branches and remote offices. Its depth of less than 18 inches makes it suitable for deployment in constrained spaces.

End-to-end virtualization solution

Cisco provides the most comprehensive single-vendor end-to-end virtualization solution, with a variety of purpose-built Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) platforms to meet different throughput requirements, NFV Infrastructure Software (NFVIS) hypervisor operating system software, and a rich catalog of VNFs (in VM and container form factor including Kubernetes), including Cisco C8000V virtualized router and Cisco Thousand Eyes all managed by a single Cisco SD-WAN Manager orchestrator.

The Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is powered by Cisco’s NFVIS hypervisor operating system software. NFVIS is preferred by most network administrators, as it gives them a familiar Cisco Command-Line Interface (CLI) to manage the device, as opposed to a generic Linux shell. NFVIS also offers a device-local GUI and YANG model and NETCONF-based APIs to give you operational flexibility.

To further enable scalable deployments, the Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is also supported within Cisco’s SD-WAN Manager orchestration software. With SD WAN Manager, you now have one centralized portal to manage all your virtualized NFV platforms and the guest VMs running on them, along with all instances of the industry-leading Catalyst 8000V virtualized router.

Expandable and 5G-ready

Along with the seven built-in WAN / LAN ports, the platform offers even more expandability, as is common across the Cisco Catalyst 8000 family. It includes one PIM slot and one NIM slot that provide further customization to meet your unique business requirements.

The Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is built for 5G networks. With 5G or LTE PIM modules, this platform will support the use of cellular-based WAN for management traffic and data traffic in future.

With NIM modules you can add additional Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports and/or additional WAN / LAN ports with MACsec capabilities.

Accelerated services with Cisco SD-WAN

Cisco SD-WAN is a set of intelligent software services that allow you to connect users, devices, and branch office locations reliably and securely across a diverse set of WAN transport links. The Catalyst 8000V on the 8300 Series Edge uCPE can dynamically route traffic across the “best” link based on up-to-the-minute application and network conditions for great application experiences. You get tight control over application performance, bandwidth usage, data privacy, and availability of your WAN links — control you need as your branches conduct greater volumes of mission-critical business with both on-premises or cloud-based controllers.

Cloud-native agility with programmable software architecture

Catalyst 8000V software also delivers a feature-rich Cisco IOS® XE-based traditional routing stack that is common to all Cisco Catalyst 8000 platforms. With an integrated software image and a single binary file, you can choose between Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN mode and Cisco IOS XE classic routing modes and switch between them when needed.

Multilayer security

The Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE platform provides a comprehensive set of security features to help ensure and maintain the integrity of the networking infrastructure in your enterprise. These include support for Cisco Secure Chain of Trust framework that provides end-to-end security. It ensures devices and data within your network are trusted and protected against malicious activities. It starts with hardware components that are sourced from trusted suppliers. One such hardware component is hardware secure boot, that ensures BIOS / UEFI to be executed on the system is legitimate and uncorrupted. Next, UEFI Secure Boot ensures the device will boot only with Cisco signed NFVIS hypervisor operating system and prevents execution of compromised software. Similarly, only properly signed guest VNFs can be hosted on the platform. The hardware based SUDI (Secure Unique Device Identifier) is used to ensure only authorized devices can establish a secure TLS or DTLS control—plane tunnel to the Cisco SD-WAN Manager orchestrator.

Additionally, there is capability of data-wipe in this NFV platform, with necessary NIST-supported utilities from hardware vendors. This data-wipe capability enables secure erase in RMA use-cases.

Software features and requirements

Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) and BIOS are bundled with NFVIS. TACACS access is provided-for CIMC.

Cisco provides a single-vendor and complete end-to-end virtualized solution that includes:

Range of NFV platforms, including this one, to match different throughput requirements

Hypervisor operating system that enables virtualization

Rich catalog of industry-leading VNFs (in VM and container form-factor including Kubernetes), such as the Cisco Catalyst 8000V virtualized router and Cisco ThousandEyes containers

      Cisco SD-WAN Manager orchestrator software

Cisco Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure Software (NFVIS) hypervisor operating system software installed on these platforms enables an optimized virtualized infrastructure to host guest VNFs. With NFVIS you can natively run VNFs in VMs or a container form factor including Kubernetes. NFVIS also enables core capabilities like backup and restore, N+3 upgrade and rollback upon failure, native IPsec Tunnel and route-distribution/learning capability, sharing of IP between hypervisor and VNF.

Cisco Catalyst 8000V virtualized router VNF software that can be configured in SD-WAN mode or in traditional routing mode. For other VNFs from Cisco and other providers, see the NFVIS release notes.

Cisco SD-WAN Manager orchestrator software, which provides a centralized and single portal that can help you configure and manage all your Cisco Catalyst 8000V VNF instances AND all your NFV platforms enabled by NFVIS, including the provisioning, monitoring, and management of all the guest VNFs.

Licensing

Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE platforms are offered only with a mandatory subscription license for Cisco Catalyst 8000V Edge Software that is governed by Cisco DNA Software for SD-WAN and Routing licensing.

Cisco DNA Software subscriptions are common across SD-WAN and traditional routing deployments, giving customers the flexibility to consume the latest technology. All subscription tiers include Cisco Software Support Service (SWSS). Ordering a subscription requires a Smart Account/Virtual Account.

For more details refer to this licensing guide.

Customers who already have surplus Cisco DNA Software subscriptions acquired via a Cisco Enterprise Agreement or a Cisco Managed Services License Agreement or a Cisco Whole Portfolio Agreement are exempt from the requirement to include a new subscription when placing their platform order.
