Getting Started
This chapter tells you how to get started with CiscoWorks Health and Utilization Monitor (HUM). CiscoWorks HUM is installed on top of CiscoWorks Common Services 3.2. The chapter contains the following topics:
•
Logging into CiscoWorks
•
Understanding the User Interface
•
Understanding the HUM Workflow
•
Launching Online Help
•
Logging Out From CiscoWorks
Logging into CiscoWorks
You must log into CiscoWorks server to access HUM. If you are logging into CiscoWorks server for the first time, you can use the reserved username as admin and password as admin.
To prevent unauthenticated access to the CiscoWorks server, CiscoWorks applications, and data, CiscoWorks Common Services provides features to manage security. You can specify the user authentication mode using the AAA Mode Setup.
CiscoWorks Common Services supports two modes of user authentication and authorization:
•
ACS mode—Access Control Server (ACS) provides authentication and authorization services in this mode. To use this mode, you must install Cisco Secure ACS on your network.
•
Non ACS mode—CiscoWorks Server provides authentication and authorization services in this mode.
By default, CiscoWorks Common Services uses CiscoWorks server authentication (Non ACS), to authenticate users and authorizes them to access CiscoWorks Common Services applications.
CiscoWorks LMS Portal is the first page that appears when you log into CiscoWorks Server. LMS Portal user interface allows you to launch the LMS applications and provides top-level navigation for the frequently used functions in these applications. You can launch HUM from CiscoWorks LMS Portal.
CiscoWorks LMS Portal provides important statistics and details of the HUM application using portlets. Portlets are the basic user interface components that are managed and displayed in the HUM View. For more information, see the User Guide for CiscoWorks LMS Portal 1.1.
To launch Health and Utilization Monitor:
Step 1
Enter the URL of CiscoWorks server in your browser.
http://server_name:port_number
Where server_name is the name of the CiscoWorks server and port_number is the TCP port used by the CiscoWorks server. In normal mode (HTTP), the default TCP port for CiscoWorks server is 1741. For example: http://ciscoworksserver:1741
•
On Windows, CiscoWorks server always uses the default port numbers (1741 and 443) in secure and normal modes.
•
On Solaris, if the default TCP ports are used by other applications, you can select different ports for secure and normal modes.
For more information, see Installing and Getting Started with CiscoWorks LAN Management Solutions 3.1.
Step 2
Enter admin in the User ID field, and the password for admin in the Password field of the Login page.
The admin password should be the same as the one entered while installing CiscoWorks Common Services.
Step 3
Click Login or press Enter.
You are now logged into CiscoWorks server.
CiscoWorks LMS Portal is the primary user interface and the launch point for all applications, including HUM. After you log into CiscoWorks, the CiscoWorks LMS Portal is displayed.
Logging sessions timeout after two hours of inactivity. If you try to perform any tasks after this, a message appears that your session has timed out and you are prompted to login again.
Step 4
Go to Health and Utilization Monitor portlet and click the portlet name Health and Utilization Monitor. See Figure 2-1.
Figure 2-1 Health and Utilization Monitor Portlet
The Health and Utilization Monitor application is launched in a separate browser window.
Understanding the User Interface
This section provides an overview of the HUM user interface. The HUM user interface is categorized as modules based on the tabs available in the HUM application page. Table 2-1 describes the tabs available in the HUM application page.

Understanding the HUM Workflow
The CiscoWorks HUM workflow is simple, flexible and allows you to navigate among application modules. Figure 2-2 demonstrates the HUM workflow.
Figure 2-2 HUM Workflow
The main workflow tasks are:
•
Install CiscoWorks HUM—CiscoWorks HUM is installed over the CiscoWorks Common Services 3.2 application.
•
Launch CiscoWorks HUM—Go to LMS Portal and select Health and Utilization Monitor. The HUM application page appears.
•
Create Poller—Create a Poller by adding devices and applying appropriate templates. Set a polling frequency to poll the devices at regular intervals.
•
Create Threshold Rule—Create a threshold rule to monitor the utilization and availability of a MIB variable in a device. Create alerts or notifications on threshold violation.
•
Generate Reports—Schedule and generate reports. Reports provide comprehensive information on the data collected by polling the device. Data in the report is presented using tables and graphs. Reports help you to analyze the utilization and availability of devices connected to the network.
•
Perform Maintenance and Administration—Performing maintenance and administrative tasks in CiscoWorks HUM is simple. You can set log levels, apply purge policies, view audit trail logs, compile new MIB files and so on.
•
Monitor and Troubleshoot Devices—You can troubleshoot and take necessary actions on the devices based on the utilization and availability levels.
HUM Deployment Scenario
Figure 2-3 demonstrates a scenario how CiscoWorks HUM is deployed in an enterprise network to monitor the devices for utilization and availability levels. The scenario also describes how the collected data is presented as reports.
Figure 2-3 Deployment Scenario
CiscoWorks HUM polls for the template MIB variables in a device through SNMP polling and collects the data. The data collected is stored in the database and generated as reports.
These reports help the network administrators to analyze the utilization and availability levels of the device in an enterprise network. Reports provide historical trending information of a device. Reports can be e-mailed, saved, or printed.
Launching Online Help
To launch the Online help, go to the HUM application page and click Help. The Help button is at the top-right corner of the HUM application page. The HUM Online help is launched in a separate browser window.
The complete User Guide can be viewed in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) from within the online help. To view the PDF, you need Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or a later version.
