Cisco Systems® introduces two new features on all Cisco® 2600XM Series multiservice routers. The first is a new 128 MB synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) dual in-line memory module (DIMM) for use in all new and existing Cisco 2600XM Series multiservice routers. This new 128 MB DIMM offers high-density memory, providing the ability to support memory increases to 256 MB of DRAM (with the correct ROM monitor [ROMmon]). All Cisco 2610XM, 2611XM, 2620XM, and 2621XM multiservice routers now ship with one 128 MB SDRAM DIMM instead of two 64 MB SDRAM DIMMs. This allows the second slot optionally to be populated at the factory with an additional 128 MB of SDRAM to achieve 256 MB of SDRAM or for the second slot to remain open for future SDRAM memory expansion up to 256 MB. The Cisco 2650XM, 2651XM, and all Cisco 2600XM Voice and Security bundles now ship with 256 MB as the default memory from the factory with each of the two DRAM slots populated with a 128 MB DRAM DIMM.
The second feature is a new internal ROMmon. This new ROMmon, Version 12.2(8r), provides support up to 256 MB of DRAM in the Cisco 2600XM Series. This new ROMmon has been shipping by default in Cisco 2600XM routers since March 2004. In addition, the new ROMmon can be installed in existing Cisco 2600XM routers that were purchased before March 2004. You can verify your existing version of ROMmon in your router by using the "show version" command. After the new ROMmon is installed, the new 128 MB SDRAM DIMMs can be installed and used to increase the maximum DRAM memory of a Cisco 2600XM router to 256 MB of DRAM. As long as the proper version of ROMmon is installed, up to two 128 MB DRAM DIMM can be used in the router with any supported Cisco IOS® Software release that supports the Cisco 2600XM routers. However, for the router to recognize and utilize more then 128 MB of DRAM, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(11)T or later must be utilized. The combination of the new ROMmon and a Cisco IOS Software release of 12.3(11)T or later will provide access to memory up to 256 MB for future Cisco IOS Software images that cannot run within the previous 128 MB DRAM limit.
The use of the new 128 MB SDRAM DIMM in conjunction with the new ROMmon provides future investment protection as new software images and features are introduced. These new features allow the customer to continue to run Cisco IOS Software images as they grow in size in the future. These new features extend the longevity of the Cisco 2600XM Series by enhancing its capabilities.
There is no change to the default Flash memory on the Cisco 2600XM Series and the maximum Flash capacity remains at 48 MB. In addition, the changes referenced in this Product Bulletin apply only to the Cisco 2600XM Series and are not supported on the older Cisco 2600 Series multiservice platforms or Cisco 2612 Multiservice Platform. The Cisco 2691 Multiservice Platform already supports a maximum of 256 MB of DRAM, and these changes do not apply to it.
Please refer to the detailed Q&As for additional information.
IMPORTANT BENEFITS
128 MB SDRAM provides the following benefits:
• Allows SDRAM on the Cisco 2600XM Series to be configured in combinations of 128 MB, 160 MB, 192 MB, and 256 MB using one 128 MB SDRAM DIMM and any combination of 32 MB, 64 MB, or another 128 MB SDRAM DIMM
• Provides the ability for customers to maximize memory capacity for future growth without future service costs for adding memory at a later date
• Replaces two 64 MB SDRAM DIMMs with one 128 MB DIMM, allowing the second memory slot to remain open for future memory growth
• Offers more cost-effective price structure than the 64 MB SDRAM, providing greater savings and more flexibility to upgrade existing or new routers to the new maximum configuration of 256 MB
• Works in any existing Cisco 2600XM Series router (requires new ROMmon)
The benefits of the new internal ROMmon (Version 12.2(8r)) include:
• Can be field-upgraded on all Cisco 2600XM Series routers
• Provides support for future Cisco IOS Software images requiring more than 128 MB of memory
UPGRADE PATHS
Existing Cisco 2600XM Series routers in the field can be upgraded with the new 128 MB SDRAM DIMM and new ROMmon. An upgrade kit that contains one 128-MB SDRAM DIMM and ROMmon can be ordered as a spare. The 128 MB SRAM DIMM can be used on existing or new Cisco 2600XM Series routers without the new ROMmon. The ROMmon is required only for future Cisco IOS Software releases if the router requires more than 128 MB of memory in the future.
AVAILABILITY
All Cisco 2600XM Series routers currently ship with the new ROMmon and include the 128 MB SDRAM when the memory default, bundle, or upgrade requires 128 MB or more of SDRAM. Table 1 shows the ordering information.
