Cisco® 3200 Series wireless and mobile routers are rugged wireless routers that offer secure data, voice, and video communication, and support multiple wired and wireless links, including integrated 802.11b/g and 4.9-GHz wireless technologies. With a flexible, compact form factor, these rugged routers are ideally suited for integration into vehicles or outdoor environments. Standards-based Mobile IP delivers transparent roaming for mobile applications; and Cisco IOS® Software provides security, manageability, and scalability, along with interoperability between networks, while allowing for future network expansions and upgrades.
The Cisco 3200 Series is a modular platform consisting of an IP routing, serial, fast ethernet, and wireless interfaces. The following cards are the building blocks for the Cisco 3200 Series:
• Mobile Access Router Card (MARC)
• Serial Mobile Interface Card (SMIC)
• Fast Ethernet Switch Mobile Interface Card (FESMIC)
• 2.4-GHz and 4.9-GHz wireless mobile interface cards (WMICs)
• Optional Cisco Rugged Enclosure with Mobile Router Power Card (MRPC) and internal cabling
The components above can be embedded into a system integrator's enclosure or purchased from Cisco as a fully assembled bundle in a Cisco 3200 rugged enclosure. The rugged enclosure addresses specific physical and environmental deployment requirements for public safety, homeland security, transportation, and defense markets. Manufactured by Cisco Systems®, the Cisco 3200 rugged enclosure completely seals the cards and is designed to withstand harsh environments inside vehicles and in outdoor deployments. The enclosure is designed to withstand high temperature variations, high altitude, intense shock/vibration, and exposure to damp, wet, or dusty conditions. The first option is to order Cisco 3200 Series bundles assembled in a Cisco Rugged Enclosure. These rugged enclosure bundles provide multiple configurations of router and mobile interface cards fully assembled in the Cisco Rugged Enclosure.
The second option is to order Cisco 3200 Series card bundles. Many systems integrators want to purchase the Cisco 3200 Series router and interface cards and embed them in custom mobile and outdoor enclosures. The Cisco 3200 Series card bundles offer a convenient way to order a predetermined set of router and mobile interface cards.
The third ordering option for the Cisco 3200 Series is to order individual or spare cards and components.
Ordering Option 1: Cisco 3200 Series Bundles in the Fully Assembled Cisco Rugged Enclosure
The rugged enclosure provides a single housing and robust protection for the Cisco 3200 Series Wireless and Mobile Router components. There are two different Cisco rugged enclosures available for order. The first enclosure is for the Cisco 3230 and the second enclosure is for the Cisco 3270. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the two different Cisco rugged enclosures.
Each router and mobile interface card stored inside the enclosure has a set of thermal plates surrounding it which act as a thermal conductor to dissipate heat from the hottest components on the card. All router and mobile interface cards inserted in the Cisco 3200 Series Rugged Enclosure must have thermal plates. Spare mobile interface cards can be ordered with or without thermal plates (Cisco 3270 spare router cards are only available with thermals plates preassembled). Cisco does not sell thermal plates separately.

Figure 2. Cisco Rugged Enclosure for the Cisco 3270 Rugged Router
Table 2 outlines the preconfigured bundles you can order in the fully assembled Cisco 3200 rugged enclosure. You can insert spare mobile interface cards (MICs) later, provided there are available slots. When you add other MICs, be sure to order the MICs with thermal plates. MICs that have thermal plates include the letters `TP' in the part number. For details, see the discussion of ordering option 3 later in this guide.

The components are the same as the fully assembled bundles shown in Table 2, but the enclosure and card bundles are unassembled. Authorized Cisco 3200 Series Authorized Technology Provider systems integrators may choose this option if they wish to further customize the enclosure to meet unique customer requirements. With an assembly kit, systems integrators can assemble the Cisco 3200 Series card stack and integrate third-party modem cards, such as PC-104+ compliant Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) or Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) modems. (Integrators must develop thermal plates for third-party PC-104+ cards that conform to the Cisco Rugged Enclosure design.) Please contact your Cisco account manager for more information on how to order assembly kit bundles.
Ordering Option 2: Standalone Cisco 3200 Series Card Bundles (No Enclosure)
Cisco 3230 Series card bundles (router and mobile interface cards without the rugged enclosure) can be ordered by Cisco 3200 Series Authorized Technology Providers. These bundles consist of the same router and mobile interface cards as the rugged enclosure bundles, but do not have the thermal plates and rugged enclosure components. Systems integrators can order Cisco 3230 Series router and interface cards to provide a Cisco wireless and mobile network solution in custom enclosures in order to meet unique deployment requirements.
These standalone card bundles ship as a set of cards with a single MARC, SMIC, and FESMIC, and an optional number of WMICs. The standalone card bundles do not include the Cisco enclosure, MRPC, or internal or external cabling. The Cisco 3200 Series card stacks are powered by a DC-to-DC power converter card available through Datel Corporation. You can order Datel power cards through the following Website: http://www.cd4power.com/. (Spare power cards with thermal plates can be ordered directly from Cisco using the following part number: C3201MRPC-TP=). Internal and external cables can be ordered separately through sales reference documentation. Information on how to order these power cables can be found at the following url: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps272/prod_brochure0900aecd8028f6f8.html
Figure 3 shows a Cisco 3230 Series Mobile Interface Card bundle.
Figure 3. Cisco 3230 Card Bundle
Table 3 lists the Cisco 3230 Series card bundles available to order from Cisco. The common denominator for each bundle is a MARC, SMIC, or FESMIC. Part numbers beginning with `C3231' do not include a SMIC. Part numbers with a `TP' indicate card bundles with thermal plates assembled on each card. Finally, The part number indicates the quantity and type of WMIC included in the bundle.
