A. With IOS XE 2.4.0 release, Cisco is introducing the Cisco WebEx node SPA for the Cisco ASR 1000 Series. In addition, the 8-port OC3/STM4 POS SPA, the 2-/4-/8-port OC12/STM4 POS and the 1-port OC48/STM16 POS/RPR SPA will be supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series.
Q. What is the Cisco WebEx node SPA?
A. The Cisco WebEx node is an extension of the WebEx Collaboration cloud. It is a shared port adapter (SPA) in standard SPA form factor and supported first on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series. The Cisco WebEx node can significantly reduce internet bandwidth consumption and improve response times for large scale users of the WebEx collaboration service.
Q. What new SPAs have been introduced on Cisco ASR 1000 Series in IOS XE 2.3.0?
A. ATM support was introduced in IOS XE 2.3.0. The 2 new ATM SPAs added to the support list are the SPA-1XOC3-ATM-V2 and the SPA-3XOC3-ATM-V2.
Q. What new SPAs have been introduced on Cisco ASR 1000 Series in IOS XE 2.2.1?
A. In IOS XE 2.2.1, the ASR1000 series added 3 new SPAs to the support list, the SPA-2XOC48POS/RPR, SPA-4XOC48POS/RPR and the SPA-1XCHSTM1/OC3.
Q. Is RPR supported on the SPA-2XOC48POS/RPR and the SPA-4XOC48POS/RPRs in IOS XE 2.2.1?
A. Currently, only POS is supported on these SPAs.
Q. Will other SPAs be supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series?
A. Yes, the Cisco ASR 1000 Series supports most of the currently shipping SPAs as well as others.
Q. How often do new SPAs get supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series?
A. The Cisco ASR 1000 Series supports high-speed serial, Channelized, Ethernet, and PoS SPA technologies and starting with IOS XE 2.4 also the Cisco WebEx node SPA. Support for additional SPAs is targeted for each new Cisco ASR 1000 IOS XE software release.
SPA Carrier Card Support
Q. How are SPAs installed and supported in the Cisco ASR 1000 chassis?
A. SPAs are supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series by installing the 10-Gbps Cisco ASR 1000 Series SPA Interface Processor (SIP) carrier card, which is supported in one of the SIP slots of the Cisco ASR 1000 chassis.
Q. How many SPAs are supported on a SIP carrier card?
A. The 10-Gbps Cisco ASR 1000 Series SIP can support up to 4 half-height or 2 full-height SPAs or 2 half-height and 1 full-height SPA. The SPA support includes Ethernet, PoS, and serial SPAs in the first Cisco ASR 1000 Series release.
Q. How many SPAs can be installed on the Cisco ASR 1000?
A. The number of total half-height SPAs supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 depends on the model type. The Cisco ASR 1002 supports 3 SPAs, the Cisco ASR 1004 with 2 SIPs supports 8 half-height SPAs, and the Cisco ASR 1006 with 3 SIPs supports up to 12 half-height SPAs.
Q. How many Cisco WebEx node SPAs can be supported on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series?
A. It depends on the ASR 1000 chassis. In the ASR 1002 chassis, one Cisco WebEx node SPA can be supported. In the ASR 1004 chassis, up to three Cisco WebEx node SPAs can be supported and in the ASR 1006 chassis up to five.
SPA Redundancy Support
Q. Does the Cisco ASR 1000 support SPA redundancy?
A. The Cisco ASR 1000 does not support SPA line-card redundancy. With appropriate network engineering that incorporates diverse routing or demarcation of physical circuits, the Cisco ASR 1006 offers compelling system redundancy.
CSU/DSU Support
Q. Are channel service units/data service units (CSUs/DSUs) supported on the SPAs?
A. Yes, the Clear Channel and Channelized T1/E1 as well as the T3/E3 SPAs provide integrated DSUs.
Optic Support
Q. What pluggable optics are supported on the SPAs?
A. Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) interface converters are supported by the PoS, optical networking, and Gigabit Ethernet SPAs. They are hot-swappable optical, and they are supported for OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48 data rates for multimode, short-reach, intermediate-reach, and long-reach applications.
