Cisco Unity Supported Platforms List

Contents

Overview

This list details the only set of platforms supported for Cisco Unity® Bridge and Cisco Unity Unified Messaging, including those shipped by Cisco®, those provided by customers, and platforms supported for upgrades.

Platform Overlays

Platform overlays are generic platform categories based on the configuration of processors, hard drives, and RAM. Each platform on this list corresponds to an overlay based upon its configuration of these components. Note that configurations and performance limits in these platform overlays describe only new server models. Existing legacy server models retain their previous performance limits as stated later in this document.
Table 1 defines the overlays.

Cisco Unity Voice Messaging and Unified Messaging Configurations

Some models of Cisco media convergence server (MCS) platforms are offered in two enterprise communications variants for Cisco Unity Unified Messaging, labeled ECS3 and ECS4 configurations. In these cases, the ECS4 configurations are optimized for voice mail only deployments, with extra hard drive capacity and redundant array of independent disks (RAID) configuration to support storage of messages on the same server. ECS3 configurations are optimized for unified messaging deployments or voice mail deployments where messages will be stored on a separate server. ECS3 configurations generally have fewer RAID-configured hard drives to provide a more cost-effective server platform when the additional on-box message store capacity is not needed.

Cisco Unity Server Physical Storage Configurations

The current generation of Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers ship with and support non-RAID (for entry level server platforms) and RAID 1 configurations. For higher-end server models, ECS3 platforms are configured with 2 X RAID 1 hard drives and are specifically targeted for off-box message storage. High-end ECS4 versions typically have 2 X RAID 1 plus 1 X RAID 10 arrays. These new mass storage configurations are designed to optimize platform input/output performance by separating binaries, transaction logs, and databases onto their own RAID arrays. For hard drive configuration of each server, refer to the platform-specific sections that follow.

Message Store Configurations and Limitations

The term message store refers to where the Cisco Unity system stores voice messages in subscriber mailboxes. For Unified Messaging configurations, the message store may be either Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino, and it must run on a separate server. For Voice Messaging configurations with Microsoft Exchange, the message store may be run either co-resident on the Cisco Unity server or on a separate server. For cases where the message store runs co-resident with the Cisco Unity system, refer to the tables above.
Note that if you are deploying Cisco Unity Unified Messaging for use with IMAP-based or Novell Groupwise desktop clients, this configuration places additional load on the Exchange message store server(s). Refer to the tables above for applicable limits. For Groupwise integrations please contact us for limits.
Also note that the maximum supported number of Lotus Domino users supported in a Unity environment, across all servers, is 7500. Lotus Domino-based environment above this size are not supported.

Operating System

As of April 9th 2007, the Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers used for Cisco Unity (identified by the part number ending in -ECSX) ship by default with the Windows 2003 operating system. The OS kit, which is automatically attached to your MCS server at the time of ordering and can be identified by the part number UNITY-SYSDISK, includes four discs:

• A Platform Configuration disc, which automatically installs Windows in the configuration required by Cisco Unity and configures RAID, if any. The Platform Configuration disc installs the English-language version of Windows, but it also includes the Microsoft Multilingual User Interface, or MUI, which allows you to display the Windows user interface in French, German, or Japanese.

• A retail Windows disc localized into French.

• A retail Windows disc localized into German.

• A retail Windows disc localized into Japanese.

Note: We recommend that you install Windows using the Platform Configuration disc unless your customer requires that other applications installed on the server (for example, Exchange) be localized into French, German, or Japanese. (If the English-language version of Windows is installed on the server, English-language versions of other applications must also be installed, as explained in the "Language Requirements for Third-Party Software" section of the applicable System Requirements for Cisco Unity at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html.) If you install the French, German, or Japanese version of Windows, you cannot use the Cisco Unity Server Updates Wizard to install the latest Microsoft updates recommended for installation on Cisco Unity, Cisco Unity Bridge, and Cisco Unity voice-recognition servers because the wizard installs only the English-language version of Microsoft updates. Instead, you must use another method to download and install recommended updates, for example, Windows Automatic Update.

The Windows 2003 OS is qualified for on-box and off-box message store deployments with Exchange 2003 using the MCS servers listed in Table 8. Customers with UCSS contracts who purchased their MCS servers from Cisco, are entitled to upgrade their operating system from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003 using the product number UNITY-OS-UPG-K9= (Refer to the Product Upgrade Tool on Cisco.com).

Virtualization

Effective February 27, 2009, Cisco Unity 7.0 is supported on a VMware ESX 3.5 platform. The Cisco Unity on VMware solution relies on Cisco's customers to support and provide the VMware infrastructure and is recommended only for customers with significant expertise and investment in datacenter virtualization. To get started, read the Design Guide for Cisco Unity Virtualization http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/virtualization_design/guide/cuvirtualdgx.html.
