The dramatic increase of the Internet use among business and residential subscribers has had a tremendous impact on the local loop-a network designed primarily for voice services. The local loop has become a critical conduit in a service provider's ability to deliver revenue-generating services. Subscriber demand for more bandwidth and value-added services has created the need for integrated access products that can deliver next-generation voice and data services over existing network infrastructures. These multiservice access platforms (MSAPs) provides the bridge between "Old World" and "New World" technologies to deliver "Real World" services.

MSAPs provide a needed common platform that enable service providers to combine voice and data in one system over a single access network. The integrated access device allows service providers to combine services in one platform, use common transport to send the service to the customer and then route the services at the customer site to the appropriate network elements. Such a platform reduces the cost of co-located equipment in the telco central office (CO). It also allows the service provider to lease fewer transport spans, which further reduces the cost of providing service and increases profits.
