Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice
Provisioning Platform Release 3.3.0

Cisco Systems is proud to announce that Cisco ONS 15454 Metro Optical Transport Platform Release 3.3.0 is available for order (Figure 1). This product release delivers greater revenue-generating service densities and also introduces several new software features that allow service providers, and enterprise users to maximize efficiencies and reduce operational costs.

ONS 15454 Release 3.3.0 Hardware Features

Four-Port OC-12/STM-4 Intermediate Reach (IR) Card—Release 3.3.0 of the ONS 15454 MSPP continues to deliver radical economics and densities with the introduction of a four-port, single-slot OC-12 card. The four-port OC-12/STM-4 card for the industry-leading Cisco ONS 15454 optical transport platform expands flexibility in network architectures and advances footprint efficiencies for enterprise users and service providers. The card features four OC-12/STM-4 interfaces (each interface can be independently provisioned to accept SONET or SDH signals) with each delivering 622.08Mbps of carrier-class service to bandwidth intensive service PoPs (Points of Presence) that require a scalable, multiservice scalable solution. The high density OC-12/STM-4 card users to further reduce operational costs by reducing required footprint (a 4x increase in service density in a single 15454 multiservice slot), decreasing power consumption, and lowering overall networking costs.

ONS 15454 Release 3.3.0 Software Features

Unified Software Release—R3.3.0 and future product releases of the Cisco ONS 15454 and ONS 15327 will be synchronous. Concurrency across both ONS 15454 and 15327 MSPP platforms allows transparent management of an ONS 15454/15327 optical network.

Local/Remote Craft Access—Greater operational efficiencies through enhancements in Remote Cisco Transport Controller (CTC) and direct CTC access.

Provisionable Spanning Tree—Additional networking flexibility is offered by allowing the user to disable spanning tree on a circuit-by-circuit basis. This allows multiple E-series Ethernet card within an ONS 15454 chassis, operating in single card ether-switch mode, to utilize the same VLAN ID numbers.

Orderwire Pass-Through—Orderwire circuits can be passed-through intermediate ONS 15454 nodes that are not equipped with an Alarm Interface Card (AIC).

Availability

Release 3.3.0 orderability is planned for the week of May 6th, 2002 with a target first customer ship (FCS) within 30 days.

Summary

The Cisco ONS 15454 Release 3.3.0 is designed to meet the demanding and evolving optical transport needs of service providers and enterprise customers. Today's networks also require efficient service delivery, bandwidth scalability, multiservice capability from a single platform, and transport protocol flexibility (aggregate multiple low-bit-rate services on any transport backbone bandwidth). Cisco ONS 15454 Release 3.3.0 exceeds these requirements with the following features:

Highest service density—Only metro optical transport solution to scale from DS1 to OC-192 with the capability to drop an entire OC-192 bandwidth using high-density OC-12 cards in a single ONS 15454 chassis.

Multiservice support—Widest selection of service interfaces to support demanding metro transport network requirements.

Most transport flexibility—Flexible networking support including rings, linear point-to point, linear add/drop, star, and hybrid topologies.

Restoration choices—UPSR, 2-fiber and 4-fiber BLSR, 1+1 APS, unprotected span, and Cisco's Path Protected Mesh Networking (PPMN).

Lowest life cycle cost—Smallest footprint, easiest to engineer and install, and lowest cost per service.
