Cisco 1000 Series Routers

Password Recovery Procedure for the Cisco 1020 Router

Document ID: 12717

Introduction

This document describes how to recover a password on a Cisco 1020 Router.

Prerequisites

Requirements

Since the Cisco 1020 Router is often not physically secured, you must call Cisco Systems or your distribution channel and provide a Cisco 1020 router-generated challenge in order to perform a password recovery. With the override program, the support representative can provide a one-time password you can use in order to enter enable mode.

Note: You can perform overrides only from the console.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on the Cisco 1020 Router.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Complete these steps in order to recover a password:

  1. From the console, log in to the Cisco 1020 Router with user name enable and password override.

Note:  If the enable password is not set, press Return at the password prompt.

    The 1020 prints a challenge.

  2. Provide the support representative with the challenge information.

The challenge is used to provide the response.

  3. On the Cisco 1020 console, log in with user name enable and password response.

You are now in enable mode.

  4. Type write terminal in order to view the current password, or type configure terminal in order to change the password.
