Introduction
This document provides configuration information for a remote feeder shelf application that uses inverse multiplexing for ATM (IMATM) to support two Frame Relay devices.
This configuration allows the use of narrowband connectivity between a Cisco MGX 8220 Edge Concentrator and a Cisco BPX 8600 Switch. The remote MGX 8220 is connected to the BPX 8600 through a four T1 IMA group on a local MGX 8220. The BPX 8600 provides switching service between two Cisco MC 3810 routers that use a network interworking (NIW) connection.
This document can help you configure Cisco equipment. It is not a substitute for proper network design and planning. See your Cisco sales engineer, systems engineer, or account manager for help with your network plan and design.
Prerequisites
Requirements
There are no specific requirements for this document.
Components Used
The versions used in this document are based on available releases. They are not intended to be strict requirements. You can read the release notes to verify that the required interfaces and the configurations are supported on each of the platforms.
-
MC 3810
Software—Cisco IOSĀ® Software Release 12.0(3) and 12.0(4)T.
Hardware—Cisco MC 3810 with T1 multiflex trunk (MFT) interface.
-
MGX 8220
Both Cisco MGX 8220 edge concentrators use the same Cisco firmware release and hardware configuration.
Firmware—Cisco MGX 8220 Version 5.0.14 Firmware Release and the appropriate versions of service module hardware and firmware on both the MGX 8220.
Hardware—The Cisco inverse multiplexing for ATM (IMATM) model B service module is used for ATM Forum compliant IMA. Four T1 trunks are used to make the connection between the two 8-port IMATM/B service modules on each of the MGX 8220 edge concentrators. The IMATM/B service modules use RJ48 connectors.
On the remote MGX 8220 edge concentrator, the T3 port on the IMATM/B service module is connected to the T3 port on the Broadband Network Module (BNM)-T3 service module. The IMATM/B and the BNM-T3 service modules each use coaxial T3 connectors.
The FRSM-8T1 service module uses RJ48 connectors.
-
BPX 8600
Software—Cisco WAN Switching System Software Release 9.2.34 and the appropriate versions of card hardware and firmware as specified in the Release Notes.
Hardware—The BPX 8600 is connected to the local MGX 8220 feeder shelf with a BNI-T3 card set. The BPX 8600 is connected to the remote MGX 8220 feeder shelf with a BXM-T3 card set. The BXM-T3 card set is connected to a local MGX 8220 IMATM/B service module T3 connector.
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Add these lines to the IMATM-8T1/B card that will be included in the IMATM group:

Check all lines and clear alarms before you create an IMA group. Cisco advices you to use contiguous lines in an IMA group, however it is not required. An IMA group can consist of lines 1, 3, 4, and 5.
Note: Line framing and line coding for T1s between the two IMATM-8T1/B service modules must match.

If the IMA group does not clear alarm after it is added at each end of the network, add a one-trunk IMA group and successive trunks one-by-one. Issue the addchrte command to add a channel route for the IMA group. This command creates a virtual path identifier (VPI) map listing on the IMATM-8T1/B and defines which cells are routed to a particular IMA group. If a channel route is not added for an IMA group, all cells are discarded as unknown vpi_vci cells. If a single IMA group is defined, and the VPI range that is sent from the attached equipment is not known, then specify the entire VPI range.

Verify the cell framing and payload scrambling settings on the T3 line. The payload scrambling setting must match the BPX 8600 BXM-T3. Payload scrambling ensures that the ATM cell payload does not resemble the cell header. It is only significant locally. Specifically, each side of an ATM interface must have the same payload scrambling value, but all ATM interfaces in the network do not require the same configuration.

Verify the interface format for the BNM-T3 trunk card. This example requires a format change to the user-network interface (UNI) because the distant end connects with the IMATM-8T1/B and the BXM-T3. The BXM-T3 does not support the STI format.
