This article is one in a series to assist in the setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Cisco Small Business products (formerly Linksys Business Series).

Note: The firmware version, type, and user interface used in this example might be different than the firmware version, type, and user interface for these switches: SRW208, SRW208G, SRW208L, SRW208P and SRW208MP, SRW2008, SRW2008P and SRW2008MP, SRW2024, SRW2048, SRW2016, SRW224G4, SRW248G4, SFE1000P, SFE2000, SFE200P, SFE2010, SFE2010P, SGE2000, SGE2000P, SGE2010, and SGE2010P.

Q. How do I upgrade the firmware of a switch via Xmodem?



A. Complete these steps in order to upgrade the firmware of a switch via Xmodem:

  1. Check the model and version number at the back of the switch.

    Note: If the hardware version is not displayed beside the model number, the device is considered version 1.

  2. Go to the Cisco Software Center (registered customers only) .

  3. Choose the correct model and hardware version of the switch, and download the firmware to your computer.

    Note: If the firmware boot image is available for download, make sure to install it first before you upgrade to the latest firmware.

  4. Connect a serial cable from the computer to the switch.

  5. Configure HyperTerminal, and set the baud rate to 38400.

  6. Turn on the switch, and press ESC immediately after the switch performs the power-on self test.

    The Startup Menu appears.

  7. Press 1 to choose Download Software.

    A message appears that indicates the code is downloading using Xmodem.

  8. Right-click in the window, and choose Send File.

  9. Choose Xmodem from the Protocol drop-down list, and click Send.
