Q. My switch keeps rebooting after I upgrade the firmware. How can I resolve this issue?



A. This problem is often associated with upgrading to the latest firmware without updating the boot loader first. If you can still get to the Power-On Self Test (POST) screen using HyperTerminal, you can revive the connection to the switch.

Revive the Connection to the Switch

You must first load firmware 1.00.69 or 1.00.86 to the switch using Xmodem. This should get the switch up and running again but with an old firmware.

  1. Connect to the console port using terminal emulation parameters (typically 38400, 8, 0, 1, None).

  2. Reboot switch by unplugging the power.

  3. After viewing PASS on the screen, press ESC on your keyboard.

    The startup menu displays.

  4. Choose [1] Download Software, and use XModem to load firmware 1.00.86. If the firmware flash is successful, the switch stops rebooting, but will have its old firmware version.

Upgrade the Boot Image and Firmware 1

Firmware SRW2016 v1.2.2

  1. Go to http://www.cisco.com/support, and download the boot image and firmware for SRW2016 v1.2.2 or SRW2024 v1.2.2.

  2. When prompted, click Download to save the file to your local drive. Note the location of the file.

  3. Set up a TFTP server on one of your PC, and save the two files on the TFTP Root directory.

    Note: This example uses Solar Winds, which is saved to a PC with an IP of 192.168.1.10.

  4. Access the switch configuration interface, and go to Maintenance > File Download.

  5. Click the Firmware radio button, and enter the IP address of the PC (for example, 192.168.1.10) in the TFTP Server IP Address field.

  6. Enter the boot image file name in the Source File Name, and choose Boot Code from the Destination File Name drop-down list.

  7. Click Submit.

    Note: Do not reboot or restart the switch until the new firmware is loaded.

  8. Click the Firmware radio button, and enter the IP address of the PC (for example, 192.168.1.10) in the TFTP Server IP Address field

  9. Enter the firmware file name in the Source File Name field, and choose Software Image from the Destination File Name drop-down list.

  10. Click Submit.

  11. Once completed, reboot the switch. 2.

  1. Go to http://www.cisco.com/support, and download the boot image and firmware for SRW2024 v1.2.2.

  2. When prompted, click Download to save the file to your local drive. Note the location of the file.

  3. Set up a TFTP server on one of your PC, and save the two files on the TFTP Root directory.

  4. Access the switch configuration interface, and go to Admin > Firmware Upgrade.

  5. Click the via TFTP radio button, and then click the Upgrade radio button.

  6. Choose Boot Code from the File Type drop-down list.

  7. Enter the IP address of the PC (for example, 192.168.1.2) in the TFTP Server field.

  8. Enter the boot image file name in the Source File field, and then click Proceed.

  10. Choose Software Image from the File Type drop-down list.
