Introduction

This article is one in a series to assist in the setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Cisco Small Business products (formerly Linksys Business Series).

Q. Can you configure the PoE settings on the device?

A.

All the 10/100 ports of the SRW224P switch supports IEEE 802.3af standard Power-over-Ethernet.  The switch can provide DC power to a wide range of connected devices, eliminating the need for additional power source and cutting down on the amount of cables attached to each device.

For each attached 802.3af device, the switch automatically senses the load and dynamically supplies the required power.  The switch delivers power to the device using the two data wire pairs in the twisted-pair cable.  Each port can provide 15.4W at the standard -48VDC voltage.

You can configure the PoE capability of the SRW224P from the PoE tab of the device.  Under the Power Config tab you can specify the Maximum power budget for the switch.  If the power demand from the device connected to the switch exceeds the power budget settings, the switch uses port power priority settings to limit the supplied power.

To access the Setup page for the device, open your internet explorer and type http://192.168.1.254 (by default the switch IP address is 192.168.1.254).  Note: The computer attached to the switch should be on the same IP range to be able to access the device.

You may configure the power allocation for each port under the Power Port Config tab.  If the device connected to the port of the switch requires more than the power budget of the port, the switch will not supply power to the device.  If the power demand of the device connected to the switch exceeds the power budget for the switch, the port power priority settings are used to control the supplied power.

The Power Port Status displays the current PoE status for all the ports.

The Power Status tab displays the Maximum Available Power, System Operation Status, MainPower Consumption and Software version.
