Problem Description
Incorrect LEDs installed on some switches do not flash Amber to report certain port status or condition. The LEDs remain Green, regardless of port status, which may indicate an incorrect port condition.
Background
The LEDs on switches manufactured between July 2, 2000 and August 20, 2000, may not function properly due to the incorrect LED being used during manufacturing. The affected switches can be identified by their Date Code. (See How to Identify Date Code below.)
When the LEDs are functioning properly, during initial power up, the LEDs will flash Amber for a second and then flash Green. They remain Green for a few seconds, and then each Green LED will blank out one at a time as it goes sequentially from port 1 onward during POST. The LEDs on these switches do not flash Amber under any conditions.
Note:? The switches still function properly and allow connectivity, even with the incorrect LEDs. The network is still up and operational for a customer using this equipment. The LEDs however, indicate a condition that may not exist.
Problem Symptoms
The LEDs will only flash Green. The port remains Green even when port status should be represented by an Amber LED, as with power up and blocking status.
The following test can be performed to check switch LED functionality.

Power up.

Connect between port 1 and 2 with a cross-over cable.

Confirm the port status with "show spanning-tree" command as follows

If the physical LED status on the switch will show a Green LED on port 1 AND a Green LED showing on port 2, the switch has incorrect LEDs. If the LEDs on the switch were functioning properly, Port 2 would show Amber, visually indicating blocking as the read out from the console port reports.
Workaround/Solution
As stated previously, the switches still function properly and allow connectivity. The network is still up and operational and correct port status is obtained via console report status.
The recommended solution is to fix on failure. Use a return materials authorization (RMA) basewd on the customer's service level. Code the RMA as FNA (Field Notice Alert)

How to Identify Date Code
The Date Codes are integrated in the first 7 characters of an 11 character Serial Number. For example, given the following SN, FAB0433A275, the the Date Code would be FAB0433.

How To Identify Hardware
The Serial Number, which contains the Date Code, can be found in three distinct places.

The Product Label on the product packout box.

If the switch is already up and running, it can be retrieved from the console using the following show command:
