The Cisco IPSec VPN Services Module delivers cost-effective VPN performance for head-end locations on the Catalyst 6500 switch. The Cisco IPSec Services Module fits into the Catalyst 6500. It does not have any physical WAN or LAN interfaces and utilises VLAN selectors for its VPN policy.
By integrating VPN termination into the switch platform, the network can be made secure without the need for extra overlay equipment and network alterations. Since IOS release 12.2(14)SY the entire line of network services modules can be used in a single chassis adding Firewall, Intrusion Detection and Network Analysis capabilities and converting the Catalyst 6500 to a high speed Security appliance.
