The Cisco Catalyst 6500 offers a wide range of supervisor engines and switching fabric modules, including the Supervisor 720 — Cisco's most powerful yet.
The evolution of the Supervisor Engines has taken place in line with the usage of the backplane in the Catalyst 6500 chassis. The first generation of Supervisors connected to a 32Gbps shared bus and all Classic line cards are connected to this backplane. The second generation of Supervisors, Switch Fabric Modules and the CEF256 and dCEF256 line cards all connect to a 256Gbps crossbar, which is also the shared bus. The new Supervisor 720 and the Next Generation of line cards CEF720, aCEF720 and dCEF 720 connect to a 720Gbps crossbar. The Supervisor 720 offers integrated switch fabric and is fully backward compatible to support all line card architectures.
