In an earlier section, you read about how password recovery works on a router. You also viewed a NetBit showing you how password recovery works on a Cisco 2600 Series Router. In this lab you will actually practice recovering a lost password on a Cisco 4500 Series Router. You should notice that the password recovery procedure is basically the same among the routers.

This lab has the following objectives:

• Power-cycle the router.
• Enter the break sequence.
• Set the configuration register to ignore the nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM).
• Reset a new password.
• Reload the router and access it using the new password.

The above commands are not all available on all of the routers in the simulation. Use the ? command to determine the commands available on each router.

Click on the Configuration Lab icon to the right to open the interactive simulation environment window in a new browser.

To enter commands, activate the simulation environment Telnet window by clicking in it.

To see a list of supported commands at each step of the exercise, you can enter the ? command (press the question mark at the prompt). If you need more help, check the tutorial to review the configuration instructions.
