The Cisco MDS 9000 16-Port Storage Services Node (SSN-16) hosts four independent service engines. Each of these engines can be activated individually and incrementally, to scale as business requirements change. They can also be configured to run separate applications.
The SSN-16 is based on the single service engine in the Cisco MDS 9000 18/4-Port Multiservice Module. Its four-to-one consolidation delivers dramatic hardware savings and frees valuable slots in the Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors chassis, or provides concentrated application intelligence when inserted into the single slot of the Cisco MDS 9222i.
Supported applications include:
Services-Oriented SAN applications, such as IOA and SME, utilize the service engines on the SSN-16 and other Cisco MDS application platforms by taking advantage of Cisco's advanced Fibre Channel Redirect technology. With Fibre Channel Redirect, the SAN administrator simply identifies the LUNs to be encrypted, or the backup or replication flows to be accelerated, and traffic is automatically redirected through the selected service engine for processing.
