A vulnerability in the syslog management subsystem of devices running Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software may allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to access sensitive information.
The vulnerability is due to improper sanitization of syslog messages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing an ASA administrator to copy a file to or from the ASA and doing one of the following:
- Listening to the communication between the ASA and the syslog server
- Accessing the syslog messages on the remote server
Exploitation could allow the attacker to obtain the password used by the ASA administrator during the copy operation.
Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security notice; however, software updates are not available.
An attacker could only exploit the vulnerability without authentication by viewing system logs stored in an unprotected location. If system log stores are kept in a protected storage location, attackers may require authentication or special access to gain access to the system logs.
