A vulnerability in the network stack of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on the affected device.
The vulnerability is due to an issue with allocating and freeing memory buffers in the network stack. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted TCP streams to an affected device in a sustained way. A successful exploit could cause the network stack of an affected device to run out of available buffers, impairing operations of control plane and management plane protocols, resulting in a DoS condition.
Note: This vulnerability can be triggered only by traffic that is destined to an affected device and cannot be exploited using traffic that transits an affected device.
Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Determining the Cisco NX-OS Software Release
Administrators can check the release of Cisco NX-OS Software that is running on a device by using the show version command in the device CLI. The following example shows the output of this command on a device that is running Cisco NX-OS Software Release 7.0(3)I5(1):

This vulnerability is due to an issue with allocating and freeing buffers in the Cisco NX-OS Software network stack known as Netstack. If the affected device runs out of available buffers, multiple control plane protocols (including routing protocols) and management protocols might stop working properly on the device, resulting in a DoS condition. The exact impact might depend on the specific platform and Cisco NX-OS Software release in use on the device.
This vulnerability can be triggered only by TCP traffic that is destined to an affected device and cannot be exploited using traffic that transits an affected device.
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must establish TCP connections to an open TCP port on the affected device. As a consequence, an attack cannot be performed using spoofed IP addresses.

Exploitation of this vulnerability could cause the affected device to consume all available network stack buffers and generate error messages similar to the following:
2019 Jan 4 11:25:00 nexus %NETSTACK-2-MPULLUP: netstack [15934] p_ip_output: m_pullup failed for IP, error ...
This error message may have multiple causes. Customers who observe this message on a device are advised to contact their support organization to determine whether the message indicates that the device has been compromised by exploitation of this vulnerability.

There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
Use of infrastructure access control lists (iACLs) and vty ACLs as recommended in the Cisco Guide to Securing NX-OS Software Devices can help reduce the attack surface by allowing access only from explicitly trusted source IP addresses.

Cisco has released free software updates that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Customers may only install and expect support for software versions and feature sets for which they have purchased a license. By installing, downloading, accessing, or otherwise using such software upgrades, customers agree to follow the terms of the Cisco software license:
