CSCuj11814 | 796x/4x phones not passing correct Device IDs to switch port via CDP |
Some models of the 7900 Series phones that use firmware Version 9.3.1SR2.1 and earlier releases might send incomplete Device IDs to their connected Cisco switches.
Cisco advises all customers to upgrade their 7900 Series phones to firmware Version 9.3.1SR3 or later in order to obtain this fix and other important firmware upgrades.Impacted Device Type | Impacted Load Name | Impacted Version |

A defect found in the firmware noted in the Products Affected section might cause some models of the 7900 Series phones to send incomplete Device IDs to their connected Cisco switches. As a result, Cisco Emergency Responder (CER) might be unable to locate some phones that run this firmware. Emergency (911) calls might be associated with incorrect locations and might be sent to the wrong Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).
After further investigation, Cisco believes that the defect might exist in previous releases of the firmware for the affected phones. Therefore, Cisco encourages customers to upgrade their phones to the latest firmware. Some models for the 7900 series phones will not send the correct Device ID to the switch via Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP). For example, if a Device ID is configured as SEP012345678901, the phone will send ?SEP0? to the Cisco switch. This affects 7900s running 9-3-1-SR2.1.
The workaround is to hard reset the phone. For example, issue a 'shutdown' followed by 'no shutdown' on a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switchport.
Upgrade affected phones to the firmware version 9.3.1SR3 or later. If you require further assistance, or if you have any further questions regarding this field notice, please contact the Cisco Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC) by one of the following methods:
