Problem Description

There is an intermittent issue with the N2K-C2348TQ and N2K-C2348UPQ Fabric Extender (FEX) that runs NX-OS versions earlier than Version 7.1(1)N1(1). The FEX might not get associated with the parent Nexus 5000/6000 switch on startup, which might result in FEX fabric interfaces that become stuck in a "SDP timeout/SFP Mismatch" state.

Background

There is a software issue which might cause control packets to not be transmitted between the FEX and the upstream switch.

Problem Symptoms

The N2K-C2348TQ and N2K-C2348UPQ FEX might not get associated with the parent Nexus 5000/6000 switch on startup, which might result in FEX fabric interfaces that become stuck in a "SDP timeout/SFP Mismatch" state.

Workaround/Solution

As part of the fix in NX-OS Version 7.1(1)N1(1), there have been changes in the Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) reset mechanism, retries included, which mitigate this problem.

If a FEX is stuck in a "SDP timeout/SFP Mismatch" state, there are two options for resolution:

  • Upgrade the parent Nexus 5000 switch to NX-OS Version 7.1(1)N1(1). Power cycle the FEX multiple times until the FEX downloads the NX-OS image from the parent switch. Once the FEX downloads the fixed image, the issue should not be seen.
  • If a FEX connected to parent switch that runs fixed code fails to boot up after multiple reloads, a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) console dongle is required in order to manually flash the FEX with NX-OS Version 7.1(1)N1(1).
