CSCvh97931 | 17112010 to fix incorrect fan status read by tach inputs to Reset FPGA - ASR1001-HX |
Cisco has determined that select ASR1001-HX routers might report false fan failures even though the fans function as designed. This issue can be remedied by an upgrade of the Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) image on the router.
This is due to a design issue in the CPLD on the ASR1001-HX, and is limited to a specific production lot. The false fan failure messages have no adverse effect on system performance since the cooling system in the router still operates as designed.
This is a preventative proactive CPLD upgrade to prevent the display of false fan failure messages.
If your router is affected (see the How To Identify Affected Products section) you must upgrade your CPLD.
Complete these steps in order to upgrade the CPLD:
Download asr1000-hw-programmables.16.08.01.SPA.pkg
with one of these methods:
Enter software.cisco.com in your browser. From the Downloads & Upgrade menu, choose Download Software. Choose Routers > WAN Aggregation and Internet Edge Routers > ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers > ASR 1001-HX Router > IOS XE Hardware Programmable Devices.
Copy the package to your bootflash: or usb0:
copy tftp:/...asr1000-hw-programmables.16.08.01.SPA.pkg bootflash:
Upgrade the active Cisco ASR1001-HX RP CPLD with this command and wait for the router prompt:
Router# upgrade hw-programmable CPLD filename bootflash:asr1000-hw-programmables.16.08.01.SPA.pkg R0
Start service Upgrade CPLD on Route-Processor 0 from current version 16033009 to 17112010 (Y)es/(N)o/(C)ontinue? [Y]
Start service. This command could take up to 10 minutes. Please wait and do NOT power-cycle the chassis or the card otherwise the hardware may be unrecoverable. At the end of upgrade you will be asked to reload the chassis. (Y)es/(N)o/(C)ontinue? [Y]
Upgrade cpld hw-programmable on Route-Processor 0
The cpld has been successfully upgraded on Route-Processor/0.
PLEASE POWER CYCLE THE CHASSIS NOW.
Power cycle the chassis. After the power cycle, the router reboots with the latest CPLD programmable firmware.
Load the same Cisco IOS-XE image in order to bring up the router.
In order to verify that the upgrade has been completed properly, enter the show hw-programmable R0 command and check for CPLD version 17112010.

Enter the show inventory command as shown in this example:
Router#show inventory NAME: "Chassis", DESCR: "Cisco ASR1001-HX Chassis" PID: ASR1001-HX , VID: V01 , SN: XXX2145XXXX
Routers with a serial number that is less than 2145 must upgrade their CPLD.
Note: Routers with a serial number equal to or greater than 2145 are NOT impacted.
Execute the show inventory to obtain Chassis Serial Number. Enter the Chassis Serial Number into the Serial Number Verification tool (link provided below)
