A limited number of 960GB solid state drives (SSDs) shipped with C9400 or C9600 supervisors will fail after 1700 hours of cumulative idle time.
The affected SSDs have an idle time counter that hangs the module after 1700 hours of cumulative idle time. The issue is limited to a specific set of SSDs and can be confirmed in Serial Number Validation Tool
The SSD will hang and no longer function unless the SSD firmware is upgraded before 1700 cumulative idle hours are reached. However, the system operation will not be interrupted by this issue.
Check to see if the 960GB SSD of the C9400 or C9600 supervisor is affected by this issue. The serial number of the supervisors with the affected SSD can be confirmed with the Serial Number Validation Tool. This can be confirmed by checking the serial number of the SSD also.
Solution: If the serial number of the supervisor or SSD is listed in the Serial Number Validation Tool, Cisco advises to upgrade the firmware of the SSD in order to avoid this issue. Assistance from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) is required to upgrade the firmware of the SSD. Contact Cisco TAC for the apropriate action.
Workaround: A forced power reset would reset the idle-time counter of the SSD, which allows more time to upgrade the firmware as suggested.
Customers are requested to back up the SSD before the firmware upgrade process is initiated.
