CSCvu57682 | ASR1001-X 16GB: Kernel crashes repeatedly after upgrading from 16.12.2 to 17.2.1 |
CSCvv19063 | ASR1K, C9800 Commit config clean up for cstate and pstate to 17.4, 17.3.2, 17.2.2: backout idle=poll |
Some ASR1001-X, ASR1001-HX, and ASR1002-HX routers with Cisco IOS® XE Release 17.x combined with earlier ROM Monitor (ROMMON) versions (16.x and earlier) might crash due to the enablement of automatic power management mode shifting on the router’s host CPU.
The issue is only seen with a specific combination of ROMMON and Cisco IOS XE versions.
Certain Cisco IOS XE 17.x releases combined with earlier ROMMON versions (16.x and earlier) enable automatic power management mode shifting. The automatic power management mode shifting might induce Multiple Bit ECC (MBE) memory errors, which results in Cisco IOS XE crashes.
Cisco IOS XE Release 17.x disables automatic power management mode.
ROMMON Version 17.3(1r) disables automatic power management mode.
Affected routers might see Cisco IOS XE crashes. There will be a message which indicates the Cisco IOS XE kernel will record logs in the “bootflash/core” directory:
--------------------- Starting IOS-XE kernel dump from previous failure. System will automatically reboot --------------------- MemAvailable: 26744 kB Initializing Hardware ... ------------------------- Affected routers will go into reboot loop generating core files each time in bootflash:core as below -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= device#dir bootflash:core Directory of bootflash:/core/ 753666 -rw- 1 Jun 5 2020 15:11:06 +02:00 .callhome 196612 -rw- 945 Jun 4 2020 11:41:52 +02:00 kernel.rp_1NG_0_inv_log_20200604094108.txt xxxxxx -rw- xxx Jun 4 2020 13:17:49 +02:00 kernel.rp_1NG_0.core.TEMP_IN_PROGRESS.txt
A software upgrade is recommended. This issue is only seen on earlier Cisco IOS XE 17.x releases with earlier ROMMON versions (16.x and earlier).
The issue can be resolved by either a ROMMON upgrade OR a Cisco IOS XE upgrade.
