Problem Description
Wi-Fi 6 access points (APs) manufactured in September 2022 and later with the Version IDs (VIDs) listed in the Products Affected section cannot join Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs) running software released prior to August 2022.
Background
The hardware products listed in the Products Affected section were redesigned to accommodate multiple suppliers for various internal components.
None of the product specifications have changed with the use of the alternate suppliers. However, some of these alternate suppliers’ devices require different drivers/firmware than the original hardware. Drivers/firmware for both the original and later version hardware are now included in the later versions of the software.
Problem Symptom
The affected APs send a Discovery request to the WLC and receive a Discovery response, but never send a Join request to the WLC. The AP console will show a message similar to this example:
[*06/21/2022 00:28:37.6150] Discovery response from MWAR 'CONTROLLER-NAME' running version w.x.y.z is rejected.
"CONTROLLER-NAME" is the name of the controller that the AP tries to join and "w.x.y.z" is the AP code version that maps to the controller version when the controller runs a version of Cisco IOS® XE or Cisco AireOS that was released earlier than August 2022.
On the WLC, enter these commands to find APs that send Discover requests but no Join requests.

Workaround/Solution
For the products and VIDs listed in the Products Affected section, follow this guidance in order to join the Cisco WLC.
AireOS
If a Cisco product runs Cisco AireOS 8.10.171.x or earlier, upgrade to Cisco AireOS 8.10.18x.0 or later.
Cisco IOS XE Software
If a Cisco product runs a Cisco IOS XE Software Release listed in the left column of the table, upgrade to the release listed in the right column of the table.
