A new solid state drive (SSD) component has been introduced in Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 560 Series Routers. If a router with the new SSD is running a Cisco IOS XR Software release earlier than Release 7.10.1 and does not have an appropriate SMU installed, an error message may be displayed during the SSD field programmable device (FPD) upgrade.
A new SSD component will be introduced on Cisco NCS 560 routers to address the end of life of the current SSD component version.
The console may generate the following failure logs for the output of the command show hw-module fpd:

The CLI output of 255.255 for the SATA device reflects the defect described in this field notice.
Details about the SSD vendor can be determined from the instructions provided in the How to Identify Affected Products section of this field notice.
The fix is included in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.10.2. On Cisco NCS 560 Series Routers that are running on Cisco IOS XR releases earlier than Release 7.10.1, Cisco recommends installation of the appropriate SMU by Feb 28, 2025, as shown in the following table. The routers with new SSDs are planned to ship from manufacturing beginning in March 2025.
Cisco IOS XR Release | SMU Name |
---|---|

To determine the details of the SSD that is on the device, use the following command:
The router console prompt needs to be in sysadmin VM prompt
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:NCS560#admin
DD MM HH:MM:SS
Last login: DD MM HH:MM:SS 2024 from 192.0.4.4
cisco connected from 192.0.4.4 using ssh on sysadmin-vm:0_RP0
sysadmin-vm:0_RP0#
Once in sysadmin prompt, run the following command in the CLI :
host:0_RP0:/misc/disk1]$ smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep "Device Model"
Cisco recommends installing the SMU or upgrading to Cisco IOS XR software release of 7.10.2 or later if the output of the command is any of the following:
Sample output 1:
[host:0_RP0:~]$ smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep "Device Model"
