Problem Description
A limited number of Cisco NCS1004 1.2T Line Cards that use AC1200 modules may experience failures due to high PCB impedance that is caused by aluminum contamination in the PCB microvias.
Background
Four failures during manufacturing production of Cisco NCS1004 1.2T Line Cards that use AC1200 modules with the same suspected root cause as the high impedance PCB prompted a thorough investigation. The investigation revealed aluminum contamination in the PCB microvia cross-sections of the failed units. This aluminum contamination could cause a microvia separation or crack, resulting in a compromised property of the microvia (high impedance) in the AC1200 PCB.
Problem Symptom
Symptoms depend on which section of microvia that contains aluminum contamination will exhibit a compromised property first and impact the sensitivity of the AC1200 module. With these, as well as the failures experienced in Cisco production, it is expected that the most probable failure will be Bit Error Rate (BER) failures.
Workaround/Solution
Solution
Cisco recommends replacing the impacted NCS1004 1.2T Line Cards to mitigate the potential for unexpected failure.

How to Identify Affected Products
Impacted NCS1004 Line Cards can be identified based on their serial number. To determine if a serial number is affected, see the Serial Number Validation section of this field notice.
Serial Number Validation
Cisco provides the Serial Number Validation Tool to verify whether a device is impacted by this issue. To check the device, enter the serial number in the Serial Number Validation Tool.

SCM will validate eligibility and ensure that a request for a particular serial number has not already been submitted. If there is already a request, SCM will indicate RMA already submitted and NOT eligible for replacement.
Provide the following information:
- Affected serial numbers. Note that a serial number entitlement check may be performed.
- One ship-to address per request.
- Service Request number (SR#). This is not required, but if one exists, enter it for better tracking purposes.
