This document describes the steps to troubleshoot 3G module for Cisco Connected Grid Router (CGR) 1000 series router with CG-OS. The article also discuss the issues, cause and remedial steps to resolve the problems.
When you troubleshoot modem issues, the first step is to determine if the CGR can recognize the module. This document explains the steps necessary to determine this and how to proceed with the process.
Contributed by Sumedha Phatak and Abhishek Kumar, Cisco TAC Engineers.
Cisco recommends that you have knowledge of these topics:
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
When you troubleshoot modem issues, the first step is to determine if the CGR can recognize the module.
After the 3G module is installed and configured, sometimes the CGR is not able to recognize the module.
1. Run the show cellular 3/1 all command to verify if the CGR can recognize the module and display all the related information. If all the fields in the output show "unknown", reload the module and wait for upto two mins before you verify again.
2. If all the fields show "unknown" even after reload, shut/ no shut the cellular interface and wait for upto two mins before you issue the show cellular 3/1 all command again.
Note: If all the field values continue to show "unknown", contact Cisco TAC for replacement of the module. Attach logs with the above troubleshooting and output of "show inventory" for serial number information.
Reload 3G Module
Use this command to reload just the 3G module.
ast03-cgr1120-cgosB# reload module 3 reloading module 3 ...
Bounce the Cellular Interface
Use this command to shut/ no shut the cellular interface.
ast03-cgr1120-cgosB# conf t Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z. ast03-cgr1120-cgosB(config)# interface cellular 3/1 ast03-cgr1120-cgosB(config-if)# shut <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Wait for 30 sec ast03-cgr1120-cgosB(config-if)# no shut

Check Cellular Interface
Issue the show ip interface brief command and verify that the cellular interface received an IP and the status is UP. If the interface was not able to get IP, continue to trpubleshoot.
ast03-cgr1120-cgosB# sh ip int b IP Interface Status for VRF "default"(1) Interface IP Address Interface Status Cell3/1 192.0.2.1 protocol-up/link-up/admin-up
Check Signal Strength
The received signal strength indication (RSSI) indicates the strength of signal received by the 3G module. This can be checked with the show cellular 3/1 radio command.
ast03-cgr1120-cgosB# sh cellular 3/1 radio Current band = WCDMA_V_850 Radio power mode = On Channel number = 4359 Band selected = Auto Current RSSI = -92 dBm
RSSI Values:
1. RSSI should be at least greater than -90 for reliable connectivity. RSSI greater than -60 indicates strong signal strength.
2. If RSSI is less than -100, module will not be able to connect to network. This maybe due to these:
3. If the RSSI is greater than -60, more troubleshooting is needed. Enable debugs to further triage the issue.
1. Verify if an outbound call is initiated and an IP address is received by the module with the show ip interface brief and show cellular 3/1 all command. Sample debug outputs to verify this:

2. If the outbound call is made but no IP address is received, collect the logs to see the disconnect reason with show log | no command and attach it to the TAC case.
3. If there is no outbound call request, execute Initialize Over the Air (IOTA) to verify if connection can be made (for CDMA module only).
cellular3/1 cdma activate otasp *22899
(i) If IOTA connection is successful, check for hardware or configuration issues.
(ii) If IOTA connection is not successful, verify the logs for the cause and issue this command:
