Question:
How to block Google Chat within Gmail?
Environment: All WSA devices
A custom category can be used to block the Google chat from within gmail.
This will cause chat enabled gmail sessions to display the following error when attempting to use sign in to chat feature:
- We're experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent.
Blocking Google Chat |
1. Create a custom category in Web Security Manager -> Custom URL Categories
2. Specify the following under Advanced: Regular Expressions mail\.google\.com/mail/channel
3. Specify the following under Sites talk.google.com, .talk.google.com
4. In an Access policy, set this custom category to Block. |
Blocking Google Chat (Alternate method) |
1. Create a custom category in Web Security Manager -> Custom URL Categories
2. Specify the following under Sites: .chatenabled.mail.google.com, chatenabled.mail.google.com, 216.239.37.125, 72.14.253.125, 72.14.217.189, 209.85.137.125
3. In an Access policy, set this custom category to Block. |

1. Match against this content type header:
User-Agent: Google Talk |
Note: If the HTTPS proxy is enabled and mail.google.com is set to passthrough, this solution will not work.
