Objective

This article aims to provide answers to the frequently asked questions about the Cisco RV34x Series Dual WAN Gigabit VPN Routers.

The Cisco RV34x Series Dual Wide Area Network (WAN) Gigabit Virtual Private Network (VPN) Security Routers are next generation high performance routers with Web Security and Cisco Anyconnect VPN. These routers are available in models with four to 16 Local Area Network (LAN) ports and Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it ideal for small networks with increased security needs.The Cisco RV34x Series Dual WAN Gigabit VPN Routers come with powerful dynamic web filters assigned to classes of devices and endpoints increase productivity and enforce network and computer security.

1. What are the differences between the Cisco RV34x Series and the RV32x Series Routers?

The differences between the RV34x Series and the RV32x Series Routers are the following:

  • Higher performance
  • Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) support for Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X
  • Application visibility and control
  • Client visibility
  • Cisco AnyConnect Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) VPN client support
  • Models with Wireless, PoE and more LAN ports
  • Automatic software updates

2. What models are available in the RV34X series?

The following models are available:

  • RV340 — Dual WAN with four LAN ports
  • RV340W — Dual WAN with four LAN ports and an integrated 802.11ac wireless access point
  • RV345 — Dual WAN with 16 LAN ports
  • RV345P - Dual WAN with 16 LAN ports, 8 being PSE (PoE) ports

3. What is Application Visibility and Control (AVC)?

Cisco Application Visibility and Control (AVC) monitors application performance and troubleshoots issues that arise on the network. The RV34x Series Routers feature AVC and can identify traffic passing from LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN by application such as Skype, Office 365, and WhatsApp. It can identify approximately 500 applications. In addition, unique WAN policies (priority and shaping) can be defined for most applications. The router comes with a 90-day trial to the service. After the trial expires, the LS-RV34X-SEC-1YR=license has to be purchased to maintain the service.

4. What is client visibility?

The RV34x series can classify LAN clients by the OS type (Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and so on). The router comes with a 90-day trial to the service. After the trial expires, the LS-RV34x-SEC-1YR=license has to be purchased to maintain the service.

5. What are the optional license part numbers?

There are two optional licenses for the RV34x Series Routers.

  • LS-RV34X-SEC-1YR= Provides one year of web filtering, application visibility and client visibility.
  • LS-RV-ACS-25-1YR= Provides one year of 25 simultaneous AnyConnect connections.

6. How many VPN tunnels are supported?

The RV34x series routers support multiple VPN methods.  A summary of these methods and the number of supported connections follows:
  • IPSec — up to 50 simultaneous connections
  • Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) — up to 25 simultaneous connections
  • Cisco AnyConnect SSL— two simultaneous connections are included for free. The number of tunnels can be increased to 25 with an optional LS-RV-ACS-25-1YR= license and further increased up to 50 tunnels with a second LS-RV-ACS=25-1YR=license. Cisco AnyConnect SSL on the RV34x series will work with the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client is not included with the device and available separately.

7. How do I get a Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Software for my mobile devices?

To use the AnyConnect VPN from a smartphone, you will need to download the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client from the app store. Cisco requires you to obtain a Cisco Secure AnyConnect Mobility Client user license to install and use the client software on a laptop, desktop computer, smartphone, or phone. The recommended license is L-AC-PLS-LIC=Oty=25 Duration=12. This gives you 25 user licenses and a user can install the client on any device he chooses.

8. Do I need an AnyConnect license on my RV34x router?

Licensing Structure - Firmware versions 1.0.3.15 and later

Moving forward, AnyConnect will incur a charge for client licenses only.

Licensing Structure - Firmware versions 1.0.2.16 or lower

If you have not yet updated your firmware, please do so now. Click here to visit the downloads page for the RV34X series. For a functional AnyConnect environment, two separate licenses are required. The first are AnyConnect server licenses, which license the server component of AnyConnect. These licenses allow a connection to a device from the AnyConnect client. The second license which is required are AnyConnect client licenses, which allow use of the AnyConnect desktop clients as well as any of the AnyConnect mobile clients that are available.

The RV340 series routers come with 2 AnyConnect server licenses by default, meaning that customers who have AnyConnect client licenses already can establish 2 VPN tunnels simultaneously with any RV340 series router.

For those that do not have AnyConnect client licenses already, the licenses must be purchased. Please refer to the Cisco AnyConnect Ordering Guide located here. Demo AnyConnect client licenses are not available for Small Business routers at the time of this writing.

9. How many power over Ethernet (PoE) ports are on the RV345P and what is the total power budget?

The RV345P has 8 ports which support 802.3af and 802.3at PoE capabilities.  Each port can support a maximum of 30W, with a total power budget of 120W.
