Multicast is a technology that delivers information to a group of devices simultaneously in a single transmission. By default, all multicast frames are sent to all ports in a VLAN. In order to selectively forward only to specific ports and filter Multicast frames on the rest of the ports, multicast filtering can be utilized. Multicast filtering ensures that multicast frames are forwarded to a subset of ports in the relevant VLAN.
This article explains how to configure multicast properties on the 200/300 Series Managed Switches.
• SF/SG 200 and SF/SG 300 Series Managed Switches
• 1.3.0.62
Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Multicast > Properties. The Properties page opens:
Step 2. Check Enable in the Bridge Multicast Filtering Status field to enable multicast filtering.
Step 3. From the VLAN ID drop-down list, choose the VLAN to which the multicast filtering is to be applied.
Step 4. Click the radio button that corresponds to the desired forwarding method in the Forwarding Method for IPv6 field. This defines the way in which IPv6 multicast frames are forwarded.
• MAC Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on the destination MAC address.
• IP Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on the destination IP address.
• Source Specific IP Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on both the source and destination address.
Step 5. Click the radio button that corresponds to the desired forwarding method in the Forwarding Method for IPv4 field. This defines the way in which IPv4 multicast frames are forwarded.
• MAC Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on the destination MAC address.
• IP Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on the destination IP address.
• Source Specific IP Group Address — The frames are forwarded based on both the source and destination address.
Step 6. Click Apply.
Note: To backup the configuration to save your changes permanently, log in to the web configuration utility and choose Administration > File Management > Copy/Save configuration. The Copy/Save Configuration page allows you to save your settings.
