A Smartport is an interface to which a built-in (or user-defined) macro may be applied. These macros are designed to provide a means to configure the switch quickly to support the communication requirements and utilize the features of various types of network devices. The network access and QoS requirements vary if the interface is connected to an IP phone, a printer, or a router and/or Access Point (AP).
The article explains how to configure Smartport on Sx500 Series Stackable Switches.
Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility, and choose Smartport > Properties. The Properties page opens.
Step 2. Configure these parameters:
– Disable — Disable Smartport in the switch.
– Enable — Enables Smartport feature manually.
– Enable by Auto Voice VLAN — Smartport features are on if Auto Voice VLAN is configured. It is the default configuration.
– CDP — Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a Cisco proprietary data link protocol used to share information about directly connected Cisco devices.
– LLDP — Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) is a vendor-neutral protocol used by network devices to advertise their identity to neighbor devices.
– Host — Any user PC or laptop with LLDP capability.
– IP Phone — CDP or LLDP capable IP Phone.
– IP Phone + Desktop — IP phone or Soft IP Phone installed on the desktop.
– Switch — CDP or LLDP enabled switches.
– Router — Layers 3 device with CDP or LLDP feature enabled.
– Wireless Access Point — Layer 2 or Layer 3 wireless Access Points with CDP or LLDP capability.
Step 3. Click Apply to save the changes. This sets the global Smartport parameters on the switch.
