Creation and Configuration of IP Multicast Groups on the Sx500 Series Stackable Switches

Objective

This article explains how to set up a group that communicates through multicast, but identifies its group members via their IP addresses. It should be noted that this is not a VLAN, but it does utilize one. This article explains about filtration, addition and deletion of IP Multicast Group.

System Configuration

Filtration of IP Multicast Groups

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Multicast > IP Multicast Group Address. The IP Multicast Group Address page opens:

Step 2. Check the desired filtering check box in the Filter field.

• VLAN ID equals to — Enter the VLAN ID of the group to be displayed. The ID number is between 1 and 4094.

• IP Version equals to —Choose the protocol version that the IP multicast group uses; either IPv4 or IPv6.

• IP Multicast Group Address equals to — Enter the IP address of the multicast group to be displayed. The value of the first set of numbers must be between 224 and 239.

• Source IP Address equals to —  Enter the IP address of the device that sends signals. If the forward mode for the group is set to (*,G), then put an asterisk (*) as the destination.

Step 6. Click Go. Any IP Multicast Groups with the matching specifications will appear below.

Add IP Multicast Group

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Multicast > IP Multicast Group Address. The IP Multicast Group Address page opens:

Step 2. Click Add to add a static IP Multicast Group Address. The Add IP Multicast Group Address window appears.

Step 3. For the VLAN ID field, enter the VLAN ID of the group you wish to create. The ID number must be between 1 and 4094.

Step 4. For the IP Version field, click either Version 4 or Version 6 as the desired network protocol.

Step 5. In the IP Multicast Group Address field, enter the IP address of the Multicast group to be displayed. The value of the first set of numbers must be between 224 and 239.

Step 6. (Optional) Check the Include check box in the Source Specific field if the multicasts in the group have a specific source.

Timesaver: If you do not check Include in step 6, skip to step 8.

Step 7. In the IP Source Address field, enter the source address to be included in the multicast group.

Step 8. Click Apply. This adds the IP Multicast group and update to the device.

IP Multicast Group Specification

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Multicast > IP Multicast Group Address. The IP Multicast Group Address page opens:

Step 2. To configure and display an IP group address, check an address then click Details. The IP Multicast Interface Settings window appears.

Step 3. From the Interface Type drop-down field, choose either Port or LAG to view either ports or LAGs. The default option is Port. After you choose an option, click Go.

Step 4: For each interface, choose one of the options:

• Static — Attaches the interface to Multicast group as a static member.

• Forbidden — Indicates that this port is forbidden from joining the group via this VLAN

• None — Indicates that the port is not currently a member of the Multicast on this VLAN. This is the default until Static or Forbidden is chosen.

Step 5. Click Apply. This updates the configuration.

Delete IP Multicast Group

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Multicast > IP Multicast Group Address. The IP Multicast Group Address page opens:

Step 2. To delete an address from the multicast group, check an address then click Delete.
