A Static IP address is an address assigned to a user by the Internet Service Provider to be the permanent address to connect to the Internet. Static IP addresses are more reliable for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), more reliable to host a gaming website or to play online games, and to use Virtual Private Network for secure access to files from a company network computer, etc. With Static IPs, you should not share the IP with another company who sends out a lot of spam, which may get their IP address blacklisted. In contrast, a static IP address can become a security risk, because the address is always the same. Static IP's are easier to track for data mining companies. Static IP addressing is less cost effective than Dynamic IP Addressing. A single IP address configuration is easier because it provides a single known IP to access with, while a dynamic IP makes it harder to locate and gain access to configure the device. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that consists of multiple smaller networks. The most well known WAN is the Internet. To gain access to the Internet, organizations called Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are used. This article explains how to configure static IP of the WAN on a SPA8000.
The Static IP configuration can be done in two ways. One is by the use of the web configuration utility. The other method for the configuration to be made is through an analog phone and the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) interface. These two methods are explained below.
Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility as an administrator and choose Advanced > Network > WAN Status. The WAN Status page opens:
Step 2. Choose Static IP for the WAN from the Connection Type drop-down list.
Step 3. Enter the desired static IP address for the WAN in the Static IP field. This IP address acts as a permanent address for the WAN port of the device. A static IP address does not change.
Step 4. Enter the subnet mask in the NetMask field. A subnet mask specifies which portion of an IP is the network address and which portion is the host address.
Step 5. Enter the IP address of the gateway in the Gateway field. The gateway allows for contact between phone adapter and the specified network.
Step 6. Click Submit All Changes to save the configuration.
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) interface is a way to change the configuration on the SPA8000 when you do not have access to a computer to access the web configuration.
Step 1. Connect an analog phone to one of the phone ports on a SPA8000.
Step 2. Press ****, in the keypad of the phone. This will connect and initiate the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) interface in the phone.
Step 3. Press 101# in the keypad of the phone, this option will direct you to the Internet connection settings.
Step 4. Enter 1# in the keypad of the phone, which correspond to the Static IP option.
Step 5. Enter 1 in the keypad of the phone to save this option.
Step 6. Press 111# in the keypad of the phone, this option will direct you to the Static IP.
Step 7. Enter the IP address that you would like to assign to the device using the keypad of the phone.
Note: Use start (*) instead of dot (.) for the decimals. For example: (192*168*0*1).
Step 8. Enter 1 in the keypad of the phonein the keypad of the phone to save this option.
Step 9. Press 121# in the keypad of the phone, this option will direct you to the Netmask option.
Step 10. Enter the Netmask that you would like to assign to the device using the keypad of the phone.
Note: Use start (*) instead of dot (.) for the decimals. For example: (255*255*255*255).
Step 11. Enter 1 in the keypad of the phone to save this option.
Step 12. Press 131# in the keypad of the phone, this option will direct you to the Gateway option.
Step 13. Enter the Gateway that you would like to assign to the device using the keypad of the phone.
Note: Use start (*) instead of dot (.) for the decimals. For example: (192*168*0*15).
Step 14. Enter 1 in the keypad of the phone to save this option.
