Captive Portal Local User Configuration on WAP321 Access Points

Objective

The captive portal allows you to block clients connected to the WAP network. Clients see a special web page for authentication purposes before they are allowed to use the Internet normally. Captive Portal verification is for both guests and authenticated users. Captive portal makes use of the web browser and turns it into an authentication device. Captive portals are specially used at many Wi-Fi hotspots to charge users to get access to the Internet. The Local Users page is used to configure either guest users or authorized users. Apart from guest users, authorized users must provide a valid username and password to access the WAP network.

This document explains how to configure Captive Portal (CP) local user on the WAP321 access point.

Captive Portal Local User Configuration

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility to choose Captive Portal > Local Users. The Local Users page opens:

Step 2. Enter the name in the User Name field. The range is 1 to 32 alphanumeric characters.

Step 3. Click Save to save changes. The page re-displays with additional fields for user configuration.

Step 4. Choose the user name that you have created from the Captive Portal drop-down list.

Step 5. Enter the user password that will authenticate the login for the currently configured user in the User Password field. The range is 8 to 32 alphanumeric and special characters. The password is case sensitive.

Step 6. (Optional) If you want to display your password in the User Password field check the Show Password as Clear Text check box.

Step 7. Enter the amount of time (in minutes) in the Away Timeout field after which the user will be logged out if there is no activity on behalf of the user. The range is from 1 to 1440 minutes. The default value is 60. A value of 0 means timeout is not enforced.

Step 8. Choose the group which you want to assign the currently configured user from the Group Name drop-down list.

Step 9. Enter the maximum upload speed in the Maximum Bandwidth Upstream field that the currently configured user can send data with the use of captive portal. The range is from 0 to 300 Mbps. The default value is 0.

Step 10. Enter the maximum download speed in the Maximum Bandwidth Downstream Rate field that the currently configured user can receive data with the use of captive portal. The range is from 0 to 300 Mbps. The default value is 0.

Step 11. (Optional) If you want to delete the currently configured user, then check the Delete User check box

Step 12. Click Save to save all the configurations made on the Local Users page.
