This article relates to Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server Expressway.
A. No. In H.323, units which act as gatekeepers (such as the TANDBERG VCS, TANDBERG Gatekeeper and TANDBERG Border Controller) can be configured as Alternates to each other. If one unit fails the other can take over and route calls as normal. That requires both units to have an identical configuration, or the call routing might change when endpoints start using the Alternate. As VCSs, Gatekeepers and Border Controllers are all different products, they cannot have the same configuration and can not be used as Alternates.
A VCS can only have other VCSs as its Alternates; a Border Controller can only have other Border Controllers as its Alternates; and a Gatekeeper can only have other Gatekeepers as its Alternates.
