Note |
Cisco IOS XR Release 7.0.14 is an Extended Maintenance Release of Cisco IOS XR Release 7.0.12 for Cisco 8000 Series routers. For more details on the Cisco IOS XR release model and associated support, see Guidelines for Cisco IOS XR Software. |
The Cisco IOS XR7 network operating system running on Cisco 8000 Series is the enhanced version of Cisco IOS XR software. The enhancements are designed to make Cisco IOS XR7 trusted, simple, and automatable.
Trusted Network
Building a secure and trustworthy network infrastructure is the one of Cisco's major objective.
The ability to verify that a Cisco device is genuine and running authentic code depends on Cisco Secure Boot. Cisco Secure Boot ensures that the device boot image is genuine and untampered. With advanced signing technology, IOS XR7 establishes software integrity enforcement and measurement.
Even if booted securely, a router may have vulnerabilities at runtime, which may remain undetected for a long time. IOS XR7 leverages Integrated Measurement Architecture (IMA) to significantly enhance security by verifying the integrity of the software at runtime.
Simple Network
The IOS XR7 operating system runs across diverse network devices that include proprietary hardware, third party hardware and virtual network functions (VNF). Also, with IOS XR7, all critical components are modularized as packages so that customers load only what they need. Cisco software packages, customized packages, third-party software packages, as well as the router configuration, are pulled together into a single Cisco software image that is known as a Golden ISO. Customized images can now be installed consistently and with confidence across devices in the network.
Automatable Network
IOS XR 7 embraces model-driven telemetry and APIs to automate your network tasks and functions. IOS XR7 supports a comprehensive list of both native and industry-driven OpenConfig models to exchange configuration and operational data between a client and a server. To keep a check on internal system parameters, IOS XR7 supports a service processor called Board Management Controller (BMC). BMC provides specialized controllers that monitor the state of a network device. It enables monitoring and management of various aspects of the system, such as device health, log events for failure analysis, environmental control, and firmware upgrades. BMC also helps in recovering the router in case of failures.
What's New in Cisco IOS XR Release 7.0.14
Cisco is continuously enhancing the product with every release and this section covers a brief description of key features and enhancements. It also includes links to detailed documentation, where available.
Software
BGP-LS for IS-IS IPv4 L2 Adjacency SIDs
BGP Link-State (LS) is an Address Family Identifier (AFI) and Sub-address Family Identifier (SAFI) defined to carry interior gateway protocol (IGP) link-state database through BGP. BGP-LS delivers network topology information to topology servers and Application Layer Traffic Optimization (ALTO) servers. BGP-LS allows policy-based control to aggregation, information-hiding, and abstraction.
For Segment Routing, BGP-LS supports IS-IS Layer 2 Adjacency SIDs.
For more information, see Configure BGP Link-State and Manually Configure a Layer 2 Adjacency SID.
Health Check
Cisco IOS XR 7.0.14 introduces the commands to collect and display the system health check metrics data for infrastructure services and counters. This enables the user to analyze the health of the system effectively.
For more information, see Check System Health.
Commands introduced:
File Mirroring
File mirroring feature enables the router to copy files or directories automatically from /harddisk:/mirror
location in active RP to /harddisk:/mirror
location in standby RP or RSP without user intervention or EEM scripts.
For more information, see Introduction to File Mirroring.
The command, mirror enable is introduced.
Options for Configuring Priority Flow Control
With this release, you can now set Priority Flow Control (PFC) threshold values using two options: buffer-internal and buffer-extended. The buffer-internal configuration applies to all ports that the line card hosts, allowing you to configure a set of these values per line card.
For more information, see Configure Priority Flow Control.
128-Multipath ECMP
The 128-Multipath ECMP feature enables the router to support up to 128 parallel multipaths to a destination. BGP multipath functionality enables you to create multiple BGP paths, both internal and external, to the FIB. The availability of multiple BGP paths allows BGP to load-balance traffic over multiple links.
For more information, see 128-Multipath ECMP .
Configuration of IP DSCP in ERSPAN
IP DSCP can be configured in ERSPAN.
For more information, see Flexible CLI for ERSPAN.
ERSPAN and Security ACL should be separate
ERSPAN and Security ACL should be separate. Starting with Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.0.14, ACL feature supports separate ACL configuration for SPAN.
For more information, see Introduction to File Mirroring.
ERSPAN GRE header sequence number support enhancement
Sequence bit is set in the GRE header and the value of sequence number is always 0 for ERSPAN packets.
For more information, see Configuring Traffic Mirroring.
Tunnel IP for ERSPAN
Tunnel IP can be configured for ERSPAN.
For more information, see Flexible CLI for ERSPAN.
Power-on Self-Test KAT for Common Criteria and FIPS
The Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.0.14 introduces the support for power-on self-test (POST) known answer test (KAT) for common criteria and FIPS compliance for the MACsec-enabled hardware on Cisco 8000 Series Routers. In POST KAT, the KAT is executed immediately after the cipher module is powered on. With this feature enabled, the system allows the traffic to pass through the MACsec-enabled hardware only if it passes the KAT. If the KAT fails, the modules shut down and the ports do not come up.
The POST KAT functionality is now available on Cisco 8800 48x100 GbE QSFP28 Line Card (8800-LC-48H).
For more information, see Power-on Self-Test KAT for Common Criteria and FIPS.
Commands introduced:
Extended ACL needs to match on the outer header for IP-in-IP De-capsulation
Extended ACL has to match on the outer header for IP-in-IP De-capsulation. Extended ACL support reduces mirrored traffic throughput. Extended ACL match is based only on the IPv4 protocol, and extended ACL is applied to the received outermost IP header, even if the outer header is locally terminated.
For more information, see Configure IP-in-IP Tunnels.
Ability to source ranges of interfaces and SVIs in ERSPAN
ERSPAN has the ability to source ranges of interfaces and SVIs.
For more information, see Flexible CLI for ERSPAN.
Layer 2 Adjacency SID
An adjacency SID is typically associated with a Layer 3 adjacency to a neighboring node. If you have Layer 3 bundle interfaces, where multiple physical interfaces form a bundle interface, the individual Layer 2 bundle members are not visible to the IGP; only the bundle interface is visible.
The Layer 2 Adjacency SID feature provides adjacency SID functionality for individual bundle members. This feature allows you to track the availability of individual bundle member links and to verify the segment routing forwarding over the individual bundle member links, for Operational Administration and Maintenance (OAM) purposes. A Layer 2 adjacency SID can be allocated dynamically or configured manually.
For more information, see Configuring an Adjacency SID.
Commands introduced or modified:
Enhanced MPLS Per Path Statistics Collection
You can increase MPLS per path statistics collection to more than 4K counters, by enabling the hw-module profile cef stats label app-default dynamic command. You can view the statistics in the show mpls forwarding labels command output.
Commands introduced or modified:
Support for ABF
Network may need to route certain traffic through specific paths instead of using the paths computed by routing protocols. This is achieved by specifying the next-hop address in ACL configurations, so that the configured next-hop address from ACL is used for forwarding packet towards its destination instead of routing packet-based destination address lookup. This feature of using next-hop in ACL configurations for forwarding is called ACL Based Forwarding (ABF). ACL-based forwarding enables you to choose service from multiple providers for broadcast TV over IP, IP telephony, data, and so on, which provides a cafeteria-like access to the Internet. Service providers can divert user traffic to various content providers.
For more information, see Configuring ACL-based Forwarding.
Controlling the TTL Value of Inner Payload Header of IP-in-IP packets
This feature enables user to control the TTL value of the inner packet’s header that is forwarded after de-capsulating the outer IP-in-IP header. Configuring this feature on the router prevents the decrement of TTL value of the inner packet’s header before it gets forwarded to the next-hop router. This feature enables custom formed IPinIP stacked packets to be forwarded even if inner packet TTL is 1. Therefore, this feature enables you to measure the link-state and path reach-ability from end to end in a network.
For more information, see Controlling the TTL Value of Inner Payload Header.
The command, hw-module profile cef ttl tunnel-ip decrement disable is introduced.
Verify Disk Space
With this release, the show install request command displays an error message when there is insufficient disk space in the root file system. You can use the show install history last package command to obtain complete details of the failure. Before installing the IOS XR packages, you can use these commands to verify the disk space.
For more information, see Install Optional Packages to Provide Additional Functionality.

Release 7.0.14 Packages
The Cisco IOS XR software is composed of a base image (ISO) that provides the XR infrastructure. The ISO image is made up of a set of packages (also called RPMs). These packages are of three types:
-
A mandatory package that is included in the ISO
-
An optional package that is included in the ISO
-
An optional package that is not included in the ISO
To determine the Cisco IOS XR Software packages installed on your router, log in to the router and enter the show install active command:
To know about all the RPMs installed including XR, OS and other components use the show install active all command
The software modularity approach provides a flexible model that allows you to install a subset of IOS XR packages on devices based on your individual requirements. All critical components are modularized as packages so that you can select the features that you want to run on your router.
Note |
The above show command output displays mandatory packages that are installed on the router. To view the optional and bug fix RPM packages, first install the package and use the show install active summary command. |

Other Important Information
-
The warning message that the smart licensing evaluation period has expired is displayed in the console every hour. There is, however, no functionality impact on the device. The issue is seen on routers that don’t have the Flexible Consumption licensing model enabled. To stop the repetitive messaging, register the device with the smart licensing server and enable the Flexible Consumption model. Later load a new registration token.
To register the device with the smart licensing server, see the Registering and Activating Your Router.
-
When you execute the show tech-support command, a temporary directory is created and the related data is stored in this directory. This directory is deleted after the command is completed. For example,
Router#run ls -ltr drwxrwxrwx. 3 root root show-tech-fabric-link-incl-loca-010cpu0_2.tgz
In case, you terminate the show tech-support command manually, we recommend you to delete the corresponding show tech directory if not needed.
Supported Transceiver Modules
To determine the transceivers that Cisco hardware device supports, refer to the Transceiver Module Group (TMG) Compatibility Matrix tool.
