Note

Cisco IOS XR Release 7.2.2 is an Extended Maintenance Release of Cisco IOS XR Release 7.2.1 for Cisco NCS 5500 Series routers. For more details on the Cisco IOS XR release model and associated support, see Guidelines for Cisco IOS XR Software.

What's New in Cisco IOS XR Release

Cisco is continuously enhancing the product with every release and this section covers a brief description of key features and enhancements. It also includes links to detailed documentation, where available.

Unless specified the following features are not supported on the Cisco 5700 series fixed port routers and the Cisco NCS 5500 series routers that have the Cisco NC57 line cards installed and operating in the native or compatibility mode.

To enable the native mode on Cisco NCS 5500 series routers having Cisco NC57 line cards, use the hw-module profile npu native-mode-enable command in the configuration mode. Ensure that you reload the router after configuring the native mode.

Table 1. Software
Feature Description

Modular QoS

QoS DSCP Preservation

This feature is now also supported on routers that have Cisco NC57 line cards installed and are operating in compatibility mode.

L2VPN

VPLS over BGP LU with or without PIC over ISIS or OSPF SR

This feature enables VPLS across inter-AS through BGP LU while Segment Routing is enabled in the core. This feature functions independent of BGP PIC. This feature is supported on Cisco NCS 5500 routers.

Multicast

Support for Multicast Over IPV4 Unicast GRE Tunnels

This feature allows encapsulation of multicast packets using GRE tunnels, thereby enabling transport of multicast packets securely between source and destination routers located in different IP clouds. Support for this feature is available on the Cisco NCS 5501-SE router.

NetFlow

Flow Filter on Cisco NC57 Line Cards

With this feature, you can collect user-defined and ACL-filtered NetFlow data that is available in the NetFlow cache and export it to an external interface for processing. Flow filter can be configured on interfaces in both egress and ingress directions.

This feature introduces the option filtered command.

NetFlow Sampling 1:2K

This release supports 1:2k sampling profile for NetFlow on the Cisco NC57 line cards. With this feature, the system performs sampling of 1 out of 2048 packets on a device and then sends it to the NetFlow exporter. Thus, providing a better and granular data analysis.

Segment Routing

DHCPv6 Relay Agent Support on SRv6

An IOS XR router can act as a DHCPv6 relay agent with a DHCPv6 server connected over an SRv6 network. A DHCP relay agent is a host that forwards DHCP packets between clients and servers that do not reside on a shared physical subnet.

SRv6 Services: BGP Global IPv6

With this feature, the egress PE can signal an SRv6 Service SID with the BGP overlay service route. The ingress PE encapsulates the IPv4/IPv6 payload in an outer IPv6 header where the destination address is the SRv6 Service SID provided by the egress PE. BGP messages between PEs carry SRv6 Service SIDs as a means to interconnect PEs.

SRv6 Services: IPv6 L3VPN

With this feature, the egress PE can signal an SRv6 Service SID with the BGP overlay service route. The ingress PE encapsulates the IPv4/IPv6 payload in an outer IPv6 header where the destination address is the SRv6 Service SID provided by the egress PE. BGP messages between PEs carry SRv6 Service SIDs as a means to interconnect PEs and form VPNs.

System Management

Support for Flexible Consumption Model on:
  • NC57-36H-SE and NC-55-32T16Q4H-A line cards

  • Cisco NCS-55A1-24Q6H-SS chassis

Support for Flexible Consumption Model (FCM) is now extended to the Cisco NC57-36H-SE and Cisco NC-55-32T16Q4H-A line cards, and the Cisco NCS-55A1-24Q6H-SS fixed chassis.

PTP and SyncE on breakout ports on NCS55A1-48Q6H-S, NCS55A1-24Q6H-S, and NCS-5501-SE routers.

IEEE-1588 PTP telecom Profiles 8275.1 and 8275.2, and Frequency Synchronization support is now extended to breakout ports on NCS55A1-48Q6H-S, NCS55A1-24Q6H-S, and NCS-5501-SE routers.

Interface and Hardware Component

Support for SDH mode under WAN-PHY Controller

In this release, support of SDH STM-64 format is added for WAN-PHY Controllers. Support of SONET OC-192 formats existed in earlier releases.

Table 2. Hardware
Feature Description

NC55-32T16Q4H-A line card

This release introduces a 10G optimized NCS5500 line card that provides 48 ports of 1/10/25 Gigabit Ethernet and 4 ports of 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet. The line card improves port density for low speed interfaces within the family of modular NCS 5500 chassis.

NC57-36H-SE line card

This release introduces a 100G optimized NCS 5700 scale line card that provides 36 ports of 100 Gigabit Ethernet with full line rate capacity. All the ports can support 100GE and 40GE optics. Only even ports support 4x25GE and 4x10GE breakout. The line card works in native and compatibility mode.

Note

NC57-36H-SE does not support 400G.

Fabric card and Fan tray version 2 for Cisco NCS 5504 router

This release introduces the following hardware:

  • NC55-5504-FC2—Cisco NCS 5504, 2nd generation Fabric Card

  • NC55-5504-FAN2—Cisco NCS 5504, 2nd generation Fan tray

Other Important Information

  • The total number of bridge-domains (2*BDs) and GRE tunnels put together should not exceed 1518.

Here the number 1518 represents the multi-dimensional scale value.

  • The offline diagnostics functionality is not supported in NCS 5500 platform. Therefore, the hw-module service offline location command will not work. However, you can use the (sysadmin)# hw-module shutdown location command to bring down the LC.

Supported Modular Port Adapters

For the compatibility details of Modular Port Adapters (MPAs) on the line cards, see the datasheet of that specific line card.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software

Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).

The upgrade document NCS5500_Upgrade_Downgrade_MOP_7.2.2.pdf is available along with the Release 7.2.2 software images downloaded from the software download page.

Production Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs)

A production SMU is a SMU that is formally requested, developed, tested, and released. Production SMUs are intended for use in a live network environment and are formally supported by the Cisco TAC and the relevant development teams. Software bugs identified through software recommendations or Bug Search Tools are not a basis for production SMU requests.

For information on production SMU types, refer the Production SMU Types section of the IOS XR Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs) guide.
