Licensing in Cisco EPN Manager

Cisco EPN Manager supports both Smart Licensing and traditional licensing. However, it does not support a hybrid model, meaning you can use only one type of license at a time. If you are currently using traditional licensing, Cisco recommends transitioning to Smart Licensing.

This article provides information about the licensing options in Cisco EPN Manager.

Licensing Models

Cisco EPN Manager offers flexible licensing options to cater to different user needs. These licensing models provide the right to use the software and its features.

  • Subscription licenses–Software with the right to use for the length of the subscription term. Subscription models generally provide faster access to the latest features and innovations and have more predictable cost structures. These subscriptions are offered for a duration of one, three, or five years. Subscription licenses entitle users to both upgrades and technical support.

  • Perpetual licenses–Software with the right to use for an indefinite period of time. Perpetual licenses are typically locked to the device, and additional annual fees are required to maintain support and maintenance. When purchasing perpetual licenses, a separate Software Innovation Access (SIA) subscription and a Technical Support subscription are required to access upgrades and technical support, respectively. These subscriptions are offered for durations of one, three, or five years.

  • Time-Based (Evaluation)–For a 90-day trial period, the product is disabled when the trial period expires. If you purchase a time-based license, the days remaining are listed next to the license name.

Types of Cisco EPN Manager Licenses

Starting with Release 5.0, Smart Licensing is automatically enabled on all new Cisco EPN Manager installations. Existing 6.x or 4.x licenses and smart tokens are recognized when you upgrade to Cisco EPN Manager version 7.x. A license upgrade is not needed for EPN Manager 7.x or later releases.

When you connect to Cisco EPN Manager without logging in, the login page displays a banner identifying the type of license the server is running. If Cisco EPN Manager is configured to use single sign-on (SSO), you can check the license type by viewing the banner contents.

Right-to-Use License

The Right-to-Use (RTU) License, also known as the base license, serves as the foundational license, providing access to all applications and device drivers without limitations on device counts. Additionally, a Northbound License is included with the base license.

Device Right-to-Manage License

The Device Right-to-Manage (RTM) License allows for the management of a specific number of devices of a specific type. For RTM licenses, the device count is displayed next to the device type.

RTM licenses are categorized by specific device capacities (small, medium, or large). By designating RTMs as small and large, Cisco EPN Manager allows for RTM license portability when moving to next-gen platforms. For example, a user transitioning from a Cisco ASR 901 router to a next-gen Cisco NCS 520 device can use the same small RTM licenses, as both devices belong to the small category. Cisco EPN Manager also discovers third-party network devices. The collected information is displayed in the web GUI, but results can vary widely depending on the responses received from the devices.

RTM licenses are displayed in the Cisco EPN Manager UI.

  • For Cisco devices—Device model, such as NCS 2002 or ASR 9001.

  • For third-party devices—Generic: Third Party Device.

Cisco EPN Manager 7.x release use the new RTM licenses. However, the RTM licenses introduced with Cisco EPN Manager 3.x and 4.x releases will continue to work in the Cisco EPN Manager 7.x release. Advanced RTM licenses are now called Advantage Add-on RTM licenses, and Full RTM licenses are now called Advantage RTM licenses.

 Note
  • Devices configured as satellites, such as Cisco ASR 903 routers with a Cisco ASR 9000v host, are counted as independent devices.

  • You can only manage a node using the equivalent RTM device capacity category. For example, a large capacity RTM license is required to manage a large capacity node.

Essential RTM License

The Cisco Essential license is a type of RTM license that enables all features and options related to device manageability, such as device inventory, chassis view, topology, alarms, configuration management, and more. This RTM license covers EMS-level functionality.

Cisco EPN Manager RTMs are available in three types of licenses: Essentials, Advantage (formerly Full), and Generic/3rd party vendor licenses. An Essential license can be upgraded to an Advantage license by purchasing an Advantage Add-on (previously Advanced) RTM license. Note that an Essential license is a prerequisite for obtaining a corresponding Advantage Add-on license.

While the naming terminology has changed, the licenses remain the same, with no impact on licenses purchased under the previous terminology.

Advantage Add-on RTM License

The Cisco Advantage Add-on Function RTM license is displayed in the web GUI as the Cisco Advantage Add-on Right-to-Manage license.

This license enables all features and options related to service discovery, provisioning, service promotion, service assurance, and multilayer trace functions. Features and menu options related to these functions are not visible unless the license is active, and any scheduled provisioning jobs will fail to run. Once you install the first Cisco Advantage Add-on RTM license, these features and options are enabled. Cisco EPN Manager tracks and reports the use of this license in the licensing dashboard.

Advantage RTM License

To simplify ordering the Essential and corresponding Advantage Add-on licenses together, Cisco EPN Manager has introduced the Advantage license. The Advantage RTM License consolidates both Essential and Advantage Add-on licenses, providing a comprehensive licensing solution.

Standby License for High Availability

The Standby (SBY) license allows for the setup of high availability deployments. In such a deployment, all device and feature licenses must be installed on the primary server. Additional license purchases are not required for the secondary server.

Smart Licensing Overview

Cisco Smart Licensing is a flexible licensing model that provides you with an easier, faster, and more consistent way to purchase and manage software across the Cisco portfolio and your organization. It provides complete visibility into your software usage and gives you full control over your licensing status.

Benefits of Smart Licensing

These are the key benefits of Smart Licensing.

  • Easy activation—Establishes a pool of software licenses that can be used across the entire organization—no more entering Product Activation Keys (PAKs).

  • Unified management—Provides a complete view into all of your Cisco products and services in a user-friendly portal.

  • License flexibility—Allows you to easily use and move licenses as needed since the software is not node-locked to your hardware.

Smart Licensing in Cisco EPN Manager

To use Smart Licensing, you must first set up a Smart Account on Cisco Software Central (software.cisco.com). A Cisco Smart Account is a repository for Smart enabled products and enables you to activate Cisco licenses, monitor license usage, and track Cisco purchases. All licenses you have purchased are kept in a centralized system called Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM), in customer specific Smart Accounts. With CSSM, you may create and manage multiple Virtual Accounts within your Smart Account to manage licenses. Cisco EPN Manager periodically sends the license usage information to CSSM. You can log in to your Smart Account to access the license utilization information.

Once the smartlicense service is active and you check out a license in the Cisco EPN Manager UI, the system enters the evaluation mode (up to 90 days) until the registration or reservation is completed. In evaluation mode, you will have access to all the features, but only for a limited duration of 90 days. After registration or reservation is completed, you can use all features until the license period expires. After the evaluation period of 90 days, if the product is still not registered with CSSM, or a reservation is not installed, all features will be marked as EvalExpired, and you will not be able to use any features until the smart license service is registered with CSSM or reservation is completed. Smart Licensing remains enabled, allowing you to register Cisco EPN Manager with CSSM or complete the reservation.

Set Up Smart Licensing in Cisco EPN Manager

Follow these high-level steps to set up Smart Licensing for Cisco EPN Manager so you can use it to manage your licenses.

1. Set up a Smart Account on Cisco Software Central.

Go to Smart Account Request and follow the instructions on the website.

2. Configure the communication between Cisco EPN Manager and Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM).

Configure License Thresholds for the Smart License Dashboard

If you are currently using traditional licensing, use these same procedures to use Cisco Smart Licensing and, when convenient, convert your existing Cisco EPN Manager licenses as described in Convert Traditional Licenses to Smart Entitlements.

Set Up the Transport Mode Between Cisco EPN Manager and CSSM

The transport mode settings decides how Cisco EPN Manager communicates with CSSM.

Follow these steps to configure the transport settings.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Settings > System Settings, then choose General > Account Settings.

Step 2

Click the Smart Licensing Transport tab and select a communication mode:

  • Direct mode—Sends license information directly to the cloud. This is the default. You cannot edit this URL. Click Test Connectivity to check the connection status.

  • Transport Gateway—Uses either a Cisco Smart Call Home transport gateway or a Cisco Smart Licensing Software satellite (which is installed at customer premises and provides a subset of CCSM functionality) for communication. Enter the appropriate URL in the Enter URL field. Click Test Connectivity to check the connection status.

  • HTTP/HTTPS Proxy—Uses either an HTTP or HTTPS proxy for communication between Cisco EPN Manager and the cloud. To enable this option, you must first configure the proxy settings. Click HTTP/HTTPS Proxy hyperlink or click the Proxy tab to add or edit the proxy settings.

Step 3

Click Save to save the transport settings.

Step 4

To revert to the default values, click Reset, and then click Save.

Enable Smart Licensing in Cisco EPN Manager

Follow these steps to enable Smart Licensing.

Before you begin

Make sure you have set up the transport mode. See Set Up the Transport Mode Between Cisco EPN Manager and CSSM.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing.

Step 2

Enable Cisco Smart Licensing in the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI.

  1. Click the Licensing Settings tab.

  2. In the Licensing Mode field, click Smart Software Licensing radio button.

  3. Choose Evolved Programmable Network Manager from the Product Name drop-down list.

  4. Click Enable Smart Software Licensing. Cisco EPN Manager may display a dialog box indicating that when you complete this procedure, you must restart the web GUI before you can proceed with the configuration step.

  5. Click OK in the dialog box.

  6. If necessary, log out of the web GUI and then log back in.

Register Cisco EPN Manager with CSSM

To register Cisco EPN Manager with CSSM, you must obtain a token from CSSM and enter it into the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI. This is a one-time requirement. If for any reason you have to re-register your product instance, you can do that by following this procedure.

Refer to the Cisco Smart Software Manager User Guide for information on how to use CSSM and the other actions that you can perform from this application—for example, renewing license registration and license authorization, unregistering the product from Cisco Smart Licensing, and so forth.

Follow these steps to register Cisco EPN Manager with CSSM.

Before you begin

Ensure that you have a Smart Account. If not, go to Smart Account Request and follow the instructions on the website.

Procedure

Step 1

Go to the Cisco Software Central web site (software.cisco.com).

Step 2

Obtain your tokens. If you already have tokens (for example, you converted traditional licensing PAKs to Smart entitlements), proceed to the next step.

If you are re-registering your product instance, your token will be listed in CSSM user interface. If your token is no longer valid, you can obtain a new token using this procedure.

  1. On Cisco Software Central, choose License > Smart Software Licensing.

  2. Select the appropriate virtual account.

  3. Click the General tab, then click New Token.

  4. Follow the instructions to provide a name, duration, and export compliance applicability before accepting the terms and responsibilities.

  5. Click Create Token.

  6. Copy the Token ID to your clipboard and proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Enter the Token ID into the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI to register the product instance.

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing.

  2. Click the Licensing Settings tab, then paste your token into the Registration Token field.

  3. Click Register.

Step 4

Log out of the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI, then log back in.

After you have registered Cisco EPN Manager with the CSSM, all Cisco EPN Manager license types will be listed in the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI, and you can choose the ones you want to use.

Follow these steps to choose Cisco EPN Manager licenses.

Procedure

Step 1

If this is the first time you are choosing Smart licenses:

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Licenses.

    After a few moments, Cisco EPN Manager displays a dialog box informing you that you cannot access the page because you are not using traditional licensing. This is normal.

  2. In the dialog box, click Smart License Settings.

  3. Click the Licensing Settings tab.

Step 2

If you are already using Smart Licensing:

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing.

  2. Click the Licensing Settings tab.

Step 3

Under Smart License Usage, click Choose Licenses.

Step 4

Select licenses from the Available Licenses dialog box, then click Save. Cisco EPN Manager immediately begins consuming the licenses.

Configure License Thresholds for the Smart License Dashboard

To efficiently manage your licenses, configure the Smart License Dashboard to indicate when Cisco EPN Manager is approaching the point where its licenses will be depleted. The settings you configure here are system-wide .

Follow these steps to configure license thresholds.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing, then click the License Dashboard Settings tab.

Step 2

Make a selection from the License Type drop-down list.

Step 3

Enter a value in the Threshold Value field.

Step 4

Click Save.

The threshold value is displayed as a straight line in the graphical representation of the License Summary and the Device Distribution for License dashlets.
 Note

Creating a threshold does not influence the license status, whether it is compliant or non-compliant. Additionally, it does not trigger any system warning events or alarms. Instead, it provides the ability to set a horizontal line on the Licensing dashboard that indicates an approaching limit.

Convert Traditional Licenses to Smart Entitlements

If you have been managing Cisco EPN Manager licenses using traditional licensing, you can enable and configure Smart Licensing by following the setup tasks in Set Up Cisco Smart Licensing in. When convenient, convert your existing traditional licenses to Smart entitlements described in this procedure. You will have to enter your Product Activation Key (PAK) numbers in the License Registration Portal on the Cisco Software Central site.

Follow these steps to convert traditional licenses.

Before you begin

  • You must have a Cisco.com account to access Cisco Software Central. If you do not have an account, go to the Cisco Software Central.

  • Make sure you have your existing traditional licensing PAK numbers.

Procedure

Step 1

On Cisco Software Central, choose License > Traditional Licensing.

Step 2

Click Continue to Product License Registration to open the License Registration Portal.

Step 3

In the field under Get New Licenses, enter your PAK numbers. If you are entering multiple PAKs, separate them with a comma. You can enter a maximum of 10 PAKs.

Step 4

Under the PAKs/Tokens tab, select the PAKs you want to convert to Smart entitlements, then choose Actions > Convert to Smart Entitlements.

Check Cisco EPN Manager License Usage

Follow these steps to check current license usage using the Smart Licensing dashboard.

 Note

If traditional licensing is enabled, the Licensing dashboard displays the Traditional Licensing dashlet. You can specify whether you want to view information about Small, Medium, Large, or Generic licenses by selecting the corresponding option from the License Type drop-down list. The dashlet will update to display information such as the device families with that license type, the number of tokens allocated to each device in those families, and the number of tokens currently not in use.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Dashboards > Licensing Dashboard to open the dashboard. For an explanation of the basic license types, see Types of Cisco EPN Manager Licenses.

The License Dashboard information is refreshed daily after the SmartLicense job runs at 2:00 a.m. To view this job, go to Administration > Dashboards > Job Dashboard.

Step 2

To view the license counts:

Choose from:

  • For the current date—check the License Summary Count area. This area displays the number of licenses consumed and the compliance status for each license type. Green indicates compliant license counts; red indicates non-compliant license counts.
  • For a specific week or month—check the License Summary dashlet. It displays a bar chart that shows the number of licenses consumed for each license type during a particular time period. Hover over a bar chart to view more details.
  • For a specific license type—check the Device Distribution for License dashlet. Click the relevant license links at the top of the License Summary dashlet. Hover your mouse cursor over the chart to view the details.

Disable Smart Licensing

Follow these steps to disable Smart Licensing.

Procedure

Step 1

Change the license setting in the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI.

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing.

  2. At the bottom of the page, click Disable Smart Licensing, then confirm your choice.

Step 2

Log out of the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI, then log back in.

Because Cisco EPN Manager is not yet registered to use traditional licensing, all features will be disabled when you log back in. This is normal.

Step 3

Enable traditional licensing in the Cisco EPN Manager web GUI.

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Licenses.

    After a few moments, Cisco EPN Manager displays a dialog box informing you that you cannot access the page because you are not using traditional licenses. This is normal.

  2. In the dialog box, click Smart License Settings.

  3. Click the License Settings tab.

  4. For the Licensing Mode, select Traditional Licensing.

  5. Click Register.

Step 4

Log out of Cisco EPN Manager, then log back in.

Renew an Expired License

Follow these steps to renew an expired license.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Licenses.

The Licenses window appears.

Step 2

Perform one of the following:

Choose from:

  • If you see the Summary and Files menus in the top left portion of the window, skip ahead to Step 4.
  • If you do not see these menus, you will first need to register traditional licensing. Proceed to Step 3.

Step 3

Register traditional licensing, then return to Step 1 of this procedure:

  1. From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Smart Software Licensing.

  2. With the Licensing Settings tab selected, click the Traditional Licensing radio button, then click Register.

  3. Log out of Cisco EPN Manager, then log back in.

Step 4

From the top left area of the window, choose Files > License Files.

The License Files window appears.

Step 5

Choose the license file you want to renew:

  1. Click Add.

    The Add A License File dialog box appears.

  2. From the Select License File field, click Choose File.

  3. Navigate to and click the appropriate license file, then click Open.

  4. Click OK.

Step 6

Log out of Cisco EPN Manager, then log back in.

License Registration and Authorization Status

The License Registration Status reflects whether the product is properly registered with Cisco Smart Software Licensing on Cisco.com.

Unregistered

Smart Software Licensing is enabled in Cisco EPN Manager but Cisco EPN Manager is not registered with CSSM.

Registered

Cisco EPN Manager is registered with CSSM. Cisco EPN Manager has received an ID certificate that will be used for future communication with the Cisco licensing authority.

Registration Expired

Cisco EPN Manager did not successfully renew its registration prior to the expiration date and has been removed from CSSM.

The License Authorization status reflects license usage against purchased licenses and indicates whether you are in compliance with Cisco Smart Licensing. If you exceed the number of purchased licenses, the product's status will be marked as Out of Compliance.

Cisco EPN Manager is running in evaluation mode (expires in 90 days).

Cisco EPN Manager has a valid Smart Account and is registered. All licenses requested by the product are authorized for use.

Cisco EPN Manager has exceeded the number of licenses that were purchased. (Specifically, the virtual account for the product instance has a shortage of one or more licenses types.)

Evaluation Expired

The evaluation period has expired and Cisco EPN Manager is in the unlicensed state.

Authorization Expired

Cisco EPN Manager did not successfully renew its license authorization prior to the authorization expiration date.

Traditional Licensing Overview

Traditional licenses involve acquiring a perpetual license for a specific version of the software. After registering the software, the license files are delivered via email. You must copy the license file to an accessible location before starting the installation. During the installation process, you will be prompted to provide the location of the license file.

These licenses are valid until the server is upgraded to a newer major version. At that point, you need to purchase new licenses, and the cycle repeats. This approach requires you to manage and update license files whenever the server is upgraded or a new server is purchased.

Traditional Licensing in Cisco EPN Manager

Cisco EPN Manager checks traditional licenses every 4 hours and writes the status to the License log located at /opt/CSCOlumos/logs/license.log. If a time-based license expires, any users in an active session will be redirected to the Licenses page, and new users will be prevented from logging in. If an RTM license device count is exceeded, you should either:

  • Delete some of the devices. After the daily inventory collection, the devices will be displayed as Managed.

  • Obtain a license with a higher RTM count. See Add or Delete Traditional Licenses.

Cisco recommends that you convert to Cisco Smart Licensing. See Set Up Cisco Smart Licensing in. If you are using Smart Licensing and want to re-enable traditional licensing, see Disable Smart Licensing.

View Traditional Licenses

Follow these steps to view the traditional Cisco EPN Manager licenses that are currently installed.

 Note

A separate license is required for each chassis in a multi-shelf device. For example, if a Cisco NCS 2006 device houses 3 chassis, 3 licenses are needed for that device.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Licenses.

Step 2

Check the Base License to view the licenses supported by Cisco EPN Manager.

Add or Delete Traditional Licenses

To install a new traditional license, the original license must already reside on the server. Do not create copies of licenses. To purchase new traditional licenses, visit www.cisco.com/go/license. Ensure you install licenses in the correct order. For example, you must always install the Base license first, as it is required by the other licenses.

When you delete a license, all information associated with that license is removed from the server.

 Caution

If you make a manual change to a license file, Cisco EPN Manager considers the file corrupted and will not install it. If this happens, obtain a new license file.

Follow these steps to manage traditional licenses.

Procedure

Step 1

From the main menu, choose Administration > Licenses and Software Updates > Licenses.

Step 2

Choose Files > License Files.

  • To add a license, click Add, click Choose File, browse to the location of the license file, and then click OK .

  • To delete a license, select the license file, then click Delete.

Move a Traditional License to Another Server

The only time you may have to move a license to another server is if you are using high availability, and a server fails. If you need to delete a license, see Add or Delete Traditional Licenses.

Follow these steps to move a traditional license.

Procedure

Step 1

Delete the traditional licenses from the original server.

Step 2

Send an e-mail to licensing@cisco.com requesting a re-host for your traditional licenses.

Step 3

When you receive the traditional license, install it on the new server.
