Bias-Free Language

The documentation set for this product strives to use bias-free language. For the purposes of this documentation set, bias-free is defined as language that does not imply discrimination based on age, disability, gender, racial identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and intersectionality. Exceptions may be present in the documentation due to language that is hardcoded in the user interfaces of the product software, language used based on RFP documentation, or language that is used by a referenced third-party product. SONET/SDH Conversion Chart

You may notice that throughout this guide, the term Synchronous Optical NETwork or SONET is used consistently instead of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy or SDH.

However, these two terms are somewhat interchangeable. The CGM software handles both SDH and SONET in the same manner. The Cisco 12000 GSR hardware supports both SDH and SONET.

SONET has been defined by the American National Standards Institution (ANSI) and is used in North America.

SDH has been defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and is now used everywhere outside of North America and Japan. SDH was standardized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

The following table parallels SONET and SDH speeds.
