Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000 Series) deliver unprecedented scale, service flexibility, and high availability for service providers’ fixed and mobile networks, data centers, and transport networks. The routers are powered by Cisco IOS XR Software, an innovative, self-healing, distributed operating system designed for always-on operation while scaling system capacity into multiple terabits per second (Tbps).
Cisco IOS XR Software is a distributed operating system designed for continuous system operation combined with service flexibility and higher performance.
This release notes describe the features provided in the Cisco IOS XR Software Release for the Cisco ASR 9000 Series router. See the Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release section in this document for information about new features provided on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series.
From Release 6.1.1 onwards, Cisco introduces support for the 64 bit Linux-based IOS XR operating system. Extensive feature parity is maintained between legacy 32-bit and new 64 bit environments.
IOS XR 64 bit on ASR 9000 is the next generation IOS XR running in virtualized environment with underlying 64 bit Linux kernel. Cisco IOS XR operating system delivers greater agility, automation and simplicity, while reducing the cost of operating the networks. Here are a few key capabilities:

Flexible Packaging—Flexible packaging is an enhancement that modularizes and delivers the Cisco IOS XR operating system as RPM packages. The base software is becoming leaner that contains only required mandatory packages. Other optional packages are separated out and made available as individually installable RPM packages. Users have the flexibility to select and install the services they want by choosing relevant RPMs. Redhat Packet Manager (RPM) based delivery of packages enable easier and faster system updates.

Data Models—Data models are a programmatic and standards-based way of configuring and collecting operational data of a network device, replacing the process of manual configuration. Using Data models, Cisco IOS XR operating system supports the automating of configurations that belong to multiple routers across the network. Data models are written in a standard, industry-defined language, which can define a new configuration and state an existing configuration on a network. Cisco IOS XR supports the YANG data modeling language. YANG can be used with the Network Configuration Protocol (Netconf) or with gRPC (google-defined Remote Procedure Calls) to automate programmable network operations.

Application Hosting—Application hosting gives administrators a platform for leveraging their own tools and utilities. Cisco IOS XR supports third-party off-the-shelf applications built using Linux tool chains. Users can run custom applications cross-compiled with the software development kit that Cisco provides. Application hosting is offered in two variants: Native and Container. Cisco IOS XR uses a 64 bit Linux-based operating system that simplifies the integration of applications, configuration management tools, and industry-standard zero touch provisioning mechanisms to meet the DevOps style workflows for service providers.

Telemetry—Streaming telemetry lets users direct data to a configured receiver for analysis and troubleshooting purposes in order to maintain the health of the network. This is achieved by leveraging the capabilities of machine-to-machine communication. Tuning a network based on real-time data is crucial for seamless operation of the network. Instead of a pull model, using a push model to continuously stream data out of the network enhances the operational performance and reduces the troubleshooting time. Data can be pushed out at intervals determined by the administrator, at a cadence as low as 10 seconds. Using sophisticated algorithms, a back-end server can then analyze data received from the Cisco IOS XR operating system. The data can be encoded in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or Google Protocol Buffers (GPB). This analysis enables back-end management systems to measure and even predict control-plane and data-plane trends.

When you upgrade the Cisco IOS XR software to Release 6.2.2, include the SMU, AA13284 with the install operation for the Cisco ASR 9910 and Cisco ASR 9922 Routers before you make them available for use. If, however, you have already installed IOS XR 6.2.2, we recommend that you now install this SMU separately. SMU AA13284 installation is necessary to ensure optimal cooling fan operation in the Cisco ASR 9910 and Cisco ASR 9922 Routers. |

The minimum memory requirements for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router running Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.2.2 consist of the following:

Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.2.2
Link Degrade Alarm in case of Link Loss Change by 3dB from the Preset Value
This feature helps in early detection of a link loss between two devices and prevents any service impact. To enable this feature user must configure a receiving optical power threshold value. Whenever the receiving power crosses the threshold, the power degrade alarm is raised. The alarm resets after the power exceeds threshold value by the set value.

EVPN IRB with Anycast Gateway: .1q, QinQ, and .1ad Access support
Ethernet VPN (EVPN) provides an extensible and flexible multi-homing VPN solution for Layer 2 connectivity among hosts over an MPLS core/IP network. EVPN Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) feature enables Layer 3 forwarding among hosts across different IP subnets, while maintaining the multi-homing capabilities of EVPN. Also, EVPN IRB feature enables EVPN hosts or subnets to communicate with IP VPNs.

EVPN IRB Anycast Gateway VM Mobility

Exclude Segment Routing Traffic Steering over RSVP-TE Tunnels
This feature allows you to exclude labeled segment routing traffic over RSVP-TE autoroute announced tunnels. The RSVP-TE tunnels will carry RSVP-TE traffic only, and labeled SR traffic is instead steered into the IS-IS SR path. When segment routing traffic is excluded, you can accurately measure the RSVP-TE traffic in the network core.

MSTAG Uplink Tracking
The MSTAG Uplink Tracking feature monitors the connectivity of an nPE gateway device to the core or aggregation network. This feature avoids traffic loss in the event of connectivity failure from a gateway router to the core network.

Line Card support on PTP Telecom Profiles
A9K-MOD200-SE/TR, A9K-MOD400-SE/TR, A9K-24X10GE-1G-SE/TR, and A9K-48X10GE-1G-SE/TR line cards support the PTP Telecom Profiles.
EVPN RPL
The EVPN RPL feature provides the route policy support for address-family L2VPN EVPN. This feature adds EVPN route filtering capabilities to the routing policy language (RPL). The filtering is based on various EVPN attributes.
A routing policy instructs the router to inspect routes, filter them, and potentially modify their attributes as they are accepted from a peer, advertised to a peer, or redistributed from one routing protocol to another.
This feature enables you to configure route-policies using EVPN network layer reachability information (NLRI) attributes of EVPN route type 1 to 5 in the route-policy match criteria, which provides more granular definition of route-policy. For example, you can specify a route-policy to be applied to only certain EVPN route-types or any combination of EVPN NLRI attributes. This feature provides flexibility in configuring and deploying solutions by enabling route-policy to filter on EVPN NLRI attributes.

EVPN Service VRF Route Leaking
EVPN Service VRF Route Leaking feature leaks routes between data center VRF and service VRF, enabling the EVPN/L3VPN hosts to access the services in the service VRF. This feature relies on Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) VRF extranet feature that imports routes between two VRFs.

200K Session Binding Support for DHCPv6
The Cisco IOS-XR Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) application is responsible for maintaining the DHCP binding state for the DHCP leases allocated to clients by the DHCP application. These binding states are learned by the DHCP application (proxy/relay/snooping). DHCP clients expect to maintain a DHCP lease regardless of the events that occur to the DHCP application.
From Release 6.2.2 onwards, 200K sessions are supported on a proxy or server running DHCPv6.

3-4 Label Hash and 5 Label Performance
This feature introduces a change in the way MPLS label hashing is done when there are more than 5 MPLS labels in a packet for the third generation ASR9000 Ethernet line cards. Prior to this release, hashing algorithm was based on the 5th label and performed in the slow-path (non-racetrack) path. With this change, MPLS label hashing is based on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th labels and performed in the fast path (racetrack) which hence improves performance. For packets with less than 5 MPLS labels in the header there is no change in the way MPLS label hashing is performed.
RSVP-TE Bandwidth Accounting
The RSVP-TE Bandwidth Accounting feature allows you to perform accounting of RSVP-TE bandwidth utilization and dark bandwidth (the total interface bandwidth utilization in the data plane excluding RSVP-TE bandwidth). You can enable RSVP-TE bandwidth accounting for all MPLS-TE enabled links using the bandwidth-accounting command in MPLS-TE configuration mode.

BNG Geo Redundancy with Satellite
From Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.2.2 and later, the BNG geo redundancy feature in Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers is enhanced to provide a satellite-based solution. The satellite box provides high density 10-Gigabit ports to terminate optical line terminals (OLTs) which works seamlessly with BNG geo redundancy solution for loss-of-signal (LOS) based detection and failover. Currently, this feature is supported only on Cisco IOS XR 32 bit IOS XR operating system, and only with the Cisco NCS 5000 Series nV satellite.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from package installation envelope (PIE) files that contain one or more software components.

Before upgrading to a new release, you must install all available bridge SMUs of the current release. For information on the bridge SMUs, refer the upgrade document. |
We recommend you to upgrade all FPGAs on a given node using the upgrade hw-module fpd all location command. Do not upgrade a card using the upgrade hw-module fpd fpga-type location command as this results in FPGA inconsistencies therefore causes card boot failure.

Resolving Upgrade File Issues

In some very rare cases inconsistencies in the content of the internal configuration files can appear. In such situations, to avoid configuration loss during upgrade, the following steps can be optionally done before activating packages: |

Clear the NVGEN cache:

Create a dummy config commit:

Force a commit update by using the reload command. Press n when the confirmation prompt appears:

In some cases other activity may preclude a reload. The following message may display:
