Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000 Series) deliver unprecedented scale, service flexibility, and high availability for service providers’ fixed and mobile networks, data centers, and transport networks. The routers are powered by Cisco IOS XR Software, an innovative, self-healing, distributed operating system designed for always-on operation while scaling system capacity into multiple terabits per second (Tbps).

Cisco IOS XR Software is a distributed operating system designed for continuous system operation combined with service flexibility and higher performance.
From Release 6.1.1 onwards, Cisco introduces support for the 64 bit Linux-based IOS XR operating system. Extensive feature parity is maintained between legacy 32 bit and new 64 bit environments.
For information on operational enhancements introduced in new 64 bit IOS XR OS, refer to the Introduction to Operational Enhancements in Cisco IOS XR guide.

The Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software is packaged in feature sets (also called software images). Each feature set contains a specific set of features for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router IOS XR Release .

The minimum memory requirements for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router running Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.4.1 consist of the following:

minimum 16 GB memory on the RSP880, RSP880-LT, RP2, A99-RSP-TR and A99-RSP-SE
-
minimum 16 GB memory on the RP2 transport optimised (TR) variant and 32 GB memory on the RP2 service edge (SE) variant

minimum 2 GB compact flash on route switch processors (RSPs)

minimum 4 GB memory on the line cards (LCs) running Cisco IOS XR 32 bit image

minimum 8 GB memory on the line cards (LCs) running Cisco IOS XR 64 bit image

Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Release 6.4.1
Advertising IPv4 NLRI with IPv6 Next Hops in MP-BGP Networks
Support has been added to advertise IPv4 NLRI with IPv6 next hops in multiprotocol BGP (MP-BGP) networks. You can configure the ipv4 forwarding-enable command in the interface configuration mode, without configuring an IPv4 address on the interface.

MACsec support over nV Satellite Access Interfaces
MACsec support over nV satellite access interfaces enables the user to configure MACsec feature over the 1GE and 10GE access interfaces of the nV satellite which are connected to the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router host over 10GE or 100GE Inter-chassis Links. This feature is supported on both Cisco IOS XR 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.

400 Satellite Access Interface Support
This feature enables the user to configure 400 satellite access interfaces per NPU of Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet line cards.

40G Inter-Chassis Links for nV System
This feature enables the user to configure Inter-Chassis Links of speed 40G between the Cisco NCS 5000 Series Satellite and the Cisco ASR9000 Series Router Host. This feature is supported on Cisco IOS XR 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.

Autonegotiation Support on 10/100M Optics
Prior to this release, default operating speed for a Gigabit Ethernet interface was 1000M. For an interface to operate in 1G sub-rate speeds (10M/100M), an explicit CLI configuration was required.
From Release 6.4.1 onwards, autonegotiation is enabled as a default setting. With this, the speed on the interface will now automatically be negotiated based on the speed on the peer interface.

Send DHCP Options to RADIUS
DHCP options are sent as Cisco attribute-value pairs (AV pairs) to the RADIS. There is an option to send all or specific incoming DHCPv4 option values in the DHCP client messages to the AAA server. This additional control facilitates advanced authorization options of the client. One of the examples of advanced authorization options available is that a particular IP address requested by a client can be allocated to that client against a random IP address allocation, if that particular IP address is not already allocated to some other client.
In the following figure, the DHCP request from client asks for a particular IP address to be allocated and therefore a particular DHCP option is configured to be sent to the RADIUS or AAA server, for example Option 1 enables allocation of a particular IP address to the client.
The AVP format is:

DHCP IPv6 Lease from the AAA Server
Cisco ASR 9000 BNG routers introduce the support for assigning DHCPv6 IP address and the lease values of the subscriber using the RADIUS profile. With this feature enabled, it is no more mandatory to configure the DHCPv6 lease values on the BNG router itself. When the first address family interface (AFI) comes up, the BNG router downloads and stores the IPv6 address and lease values of the user profile from the AAA server. If IPv6 AFI comes up with a delay, then the BNG router assigns the absolute lease value that is downloaded from the AAA server, to the client. As part of this feature, a new Cisco attribute-value pair (AVP), dhcpv6-ip-lease , is introduced to specify the client IPv6 address and lease values.

DHCPv6 Option 16 Filtering
The DHCPv6 option 16 filtering feature in Cisco ASR 9000 BNG routers controls the DHCP SOLICIT packets from the clients based on the DHCP option 16 information such as vendor-class data and enterprise-ID. This feature provides administrator, the flexibility to allow or drop block listed of clients as early as during DHCP session handling, that is, even before the interaction with the RADIUS server begins.

Rich DHCPv6 Option on RADIUS VSA for DHCPv6 Servers
From Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.4.1 and later, Cisco ASR 9000 BNG routers introduce the support for specifying rich DHCP option through RADIUS vendor-specific attribute (VSA), for DHCPv6 servers as well. Prior to this, this feature was available only for DHCPv4 servers. The BNG router processes the Cisco attribute-value pair (AVP), and each AVP carries a generic DHCPv6 option. This in turn sets various DHCP IPv6 options for each subscriber while authorizing the subscriber with the RADIUS Server. A new Cisco AVP, dhcpv6-option , is introduced as part of this feature to handle various DHCPv6 option types.

DHCPv6 Option 1 and Option 16 to Form Authentication Username
This feature gives the flexibility to choose the format of the username that the BNG router sends to the AAA server as part of user authentication. The username is formed using DHCPv6 option 1 and option 16 present in the DHCP SOLICIT message. BNG uses the Identifier field of DHCP unique identifier (DUID) type 2 from the DHCP option 1, and the vendor-class-data from the DHCP option 16, to form the username.

AAA Authorization on DHCP RENEW or REBIND
From Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.4.1 and later, you can set new session attributes for the subscriber session even at the time of session lease renewal. The BNG router triggers an authorization process with the AAA server both at the time of starting the subscriber session as well as at the time of lease renewal. The main purpose of the BNG-AAA server interaction during the lease renewal is to control the IP address allocation and to change the lease time of the session. The AAA server can modify the lease values during the renewal. With this feature, the AAA server can have more control on the DHCP timers of each session, thereby controlling the burst of renewals from each DHCP client. This feature is supported only for DHCPv4; not for DHCPv6. As part of this feature, a new Cisco attribute-value pair (AVP), dhcpv4-ip-lease , is introduced in BNG to specify the client IPv4 address and lease values.

Commit Optimization
This feature when enabled, prevents the overwriting of the running configuration on the router in cases when the new configuration applied is already present in the running configuration. This feature is supported on the both Cisco IOS XR 32 bit and 64 bit operating system

NTP Authenticate Enabled by Default
This feature enables the NTP authentication by default, in order to prevent exploitable conditions from occurring when administrators enable ephemeral associations such as "ntp passive", "ntp broadcast client", or "ntp multicast client".

Resignaling Transit LSPs
An LSR may be part of several LSPs originiating from different headends. If the LSR is down LSPs going through the LSR needs to be recalculated. This feature allows a LSR which provides transits as part of LSPs to send a message to all the head-ends to recalculte their LSPs if the LSR is down.

Enabling Forward Class Zero in PBTS
This feature allows you to configure forward class zero or the default class as a PBTS forwarding class. Earlier, only values from one to seven were configurable as PBTS forwarding classes.

BGP Proxy Prefix SID
BGP prefix SID attribute is a BGP extension to signal BGP prefix-SIDs. BGP proxy prefix SID feature allows you to attach BGP prefix SID attributes for remote prefixes learnt over BGP labeled unicast (LU) sessions and propagate them as SR prefixes using BGP LU. This allows an LSP towards non-SR endpoints to use segment routing global block in SR domain.

SR Policy OAM
This feature allows to use an installed service policy name or binding segment ID (SID) for segment routing OAM using Nil-FEC LSP ping and traceroute operations instead of mentioning the complete label stack.

EVPN Core Isolation Protection
The EVPN Core Isolation Protection feature enables you to monitor and detect the link failure in the core. When a provider edge (PE) device loses its connectivity to the core network, EVPN brings down the PE's Ethernet Segment attached to the customer edge (CE) device. The node is isolated from the core and is not involved in forwarding or receiving traffic from or to the CE and peer PE.

ICCP-SM Redundancy Group
Prior to Release 6.4.1, ICCP-SM configurations were required to match on both peers for traffic flow. Primary VLANs on one PoA were configured as secondary VLANs on the other. If there was a mismatch in VLAN configuration, all primary and secondary VLANs were blocked. Also, when a user configured a new VLAN, there was a temporary mismatch which blocked other services until the VLAN configuration on both sides matched.
Starting from Release 6.4.1, when there is a mismatch in VLAN configuration on PoAs, instead of blocking all primary and secondary VLANs, only unmatched VLANs are blocked. That is, if at least one primary VLAN on one PoA matches the secondary VLAN on the other PoA, traffic flows. If misconfiguration is detected while there is no port failure, each PoA re-evaluates the configuration. The PoAs move misconfigured VLANs to the secondary VLAN list while the primary VLANs forward traffic. The misconfigured VLAN list also includes those VLANs that are only configured remotely. For example, if VLAN 1 is only configured on remote PoA and is not configured locally, VLAN 1 will still be in the secondary list locally.
When two PoAs are connected, if one PoA has been configured with Release 6.4.1 image and the other PoA has been configured with an image earlier to Release 6.4.1, the behavior of the PoAs with respect to forwarding and blocking the traffic is different from each other. The PoA with an image earlier to Release 6.4.1 blocks all VLANs when there is a mismatch in VLAN configuration. The PoA with Release 6.4.1 image forwards primary VLANs that are matched in secondary list on the peer PoA.
L2 Traffic Tunneling with IP Load Balance Hashing for MPLS Encapsulated Packets
If the frame is IP-based, the load-balancing flow “src-dst-ip” configuration causes the Layer 2 interfaces to use the IP header for flow balancing hash calculation. If the frame is not IP-based, the MAC header is used for the hash calculation. In previous releases, for an MPLS header between the MAC and IP headers, the code would use the MAC header for the flow balancing hash.
From Release 6.4.1 onwards, the code analyzes the MPLS header, and if an IP header is available, it uses that for hash calculation.
If the MPLS label stack is more than four labels deep, the code stops looking for an IP header and reverts to the MAC header hash calculation.
Traffic Injection from L2TPv3 over IPv6 Tunnel
The Traffic Injection from L2TPv3 over IPv6 Tunnel feature allows you to inject diagnostic traffic through L2TPv3 Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) tunnel. The diagnostic traffic allows you to monitor and troubleshoot the network traffic. You can send the diagnostic traffic from customer office (CO) using traffic generator towards the customer or towards the network.

The extra information that manifests as noise when logging into the System Admin mode is removed.
Show Configuration Changes of a Commit Action
The changes made to a running configuration by a commit action is accessible using show configuration commit changes command. This allows the user to enter a commit ID, and view the configuration changes of a specific commit action.

Reduced Telemetry Polling Interval
Model-driven telemetry supports MPLS dark bandwidth with the polling interval reduced to 10 seconds. The dark bandwidth is the total interface bandwidth utilization in the data plane, excluding the RSVP-TE bandwidth.

MC-LAG Hot Standby Mode Support
From Cisco IOS XR Release 6.4.1, MC-LAG hot standby mode is supported on access ports participating in L2 multicast offload. MC-LAG hot standby mode provides high availability functionality for L2 multicast traffic. Only hub and spoke topology supported for the MC-LAG nV satellite offload.

Telecom Profile Support on 100G Interface
1588/PTP is also supported on Cisco IOS XR 64 bit from Release 6.4.1 onwards. G.8275.1 Telecom Profile is now supported on 100G interfaces on A9K-4X100GE-SE/TR and A9K-8X100GE-SE/TR line cards. On Cisco IOS XR 64 bit, G.8273.2 profile is supported on A9K-RSP880-LT-SE/TR, A9K-4X100GE-SE/TR, and A9K-8X100GE-SE/TR line cards.
On Cisco IOS XR 64 bit, Cisco ASR9901 Router supports SyncE and PTP (Default, G.8265.1, G.8275.1 and G.8275.2 profiles).

Leap Second Command Support
In prior releases, IOS-XR only offered a static and time-consuming solution to manage Leap Seconds. For every upcoming leap second inclusion, the number of leap seconds is hard-coded into a SMU and has to be installed for the same.
From Release 6.4.1 onward, Cisco IOS-XR supports a leap-second command that can be used to configure leap seconds instead of SMU installations or reloads.

CGN Sequential Algorithm
In classic NAT, the process of mapping a private IP to a public IP or a private port to an outside port is random. Therefore, it becomes difficult to track the subscribers using an IP and a port at a given time. Predefined NAT avoids this random process by mapping a private IP address to a range of ports associated with the corresponding public IP address. This is done through an algorithm that helps the user to recognize a private IP address without having to refer to the massive CGN logs. The address and port translation is done in accordance with the algorithm.
CGN sequential algorithm is based on RFC 7422 support for CGNAT44 deployment with A9K-VSM-500.

Pulse Queue State Monitoring
This feature enables the monitoring of the pulse queue state every 100 ms and if the pulse queue count increases beyond the defined threshold levels, an IOS error message will be generated every minute for the top 5 pulse queue users or processes.
This feature is supported only on Cisco IOS XR 32 bit operating system.

Increase in Throttle Memory Range
The high range of memory usage per session by the XML agent is increased from 600 MB to 1024 MB. Supported only on IOS XR 64-bit OS.

ISSU Support for Cisco ASR 9910 Chassis
In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) for Cisco IOS-XR 64 bit is supported on Cisco ASR 9910 router chassis. For more information about ISSU, see System Management Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
MACSec Using EAP-TLS Authentication
The MACSec encryption between two ASR 9000 Routers is achieved using the 802.1x Port-based authentication with Extensible Authentication Protocol-Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS). EAP-TLS allows mutual authentication using certificates, between the authentication server and the client, and generates the Master Session Key (MSK). This MSK is used to derive the Connectivity Association Key (CAK), and the corresponding Connectivity Association Key Name (CKN) is derived from the EAP session ID.

In-line Modification of Netflow Configuration
The In-line modification of Netflow configuration enables to add or remove flow attributes of a flow entity that is already applied to an interface.

IP-MIB Support for IPv4
IOS-XR implementation of IP-MIB now supports IPv4 statistics as per RFC4293. Refer to the SNMP OID Navigator for a list of new OIDs added for iPv4 statistics.

This feature enables the logging of the configuration commands executed by the users as syslog messages. Hence all the commands that were executed can be viewed from the output of the show logging command. This feature is supported on both Cisco IOS XR 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.

PBB EVPN Support for nV System
PBB EVPN support for nV System feature enables the user to configure PBB EVPN over an nV system which is in single homed topology or a multi-chassis system with access-port bundles along with ICL bundles.

EVPN IRB: DHCP Relay Version 4/Version 6
EVPN IRB: DHCP Relay Version 4/Version 6 feature provides DHCP support for the end users in EVPN multi-homing Active-Active (MH-AA) deployment scenario. This feature helps in reduced traffic flooding, increased load sharing at VTEP, faster convergence during link and device failures, and simplified data center automation.
DHCP v4/v6 Relay agent relays request packets that come over access interface towards external DHCPv4/v6 server to request address (/32) and IANA (::/128) allocation for the end user.

BGP Large Community String
BGP communities provides a way to group destinations and apply routing decisions such as acceptance, rejection, preference, or redistribution on a group of destinations using community attributes. BGP community attributes are variable length attributes consisting of a set of one or more 4-byte values which are split into two parts of 16 bits to represent AS number and a locally defined value. BGP large community is a 12 byte optional attribute which can accommodate 4 byte ASNs which cannot be accommodated by the BGP community or the BGP extended community.

EVPN Multiple Services per Ethernet Segment
EVPN Multiple Services per Ethernet Segment feature allows you to configure multiple services over single Ethernet Segment (ES). Instead of configuring multiple services over multiple ES, you can configure multiple services over a single ES. With this feature you can optimize the use of resources, especially bandwidth and reduce the cost of hardware.

Management Plane Protection for Third-Party Applications
Management Plane Protection (MPP) provides a mechanism for securing management traffic on the router. Without MPP, if the service is enabled, the Cisco IOS XR allows the service traffic to pass through any interface with a network address.
MPP configuration for third-party application (TPA) enables to filter the traffic of TPA component, for example, gRPC component. The addition of gRPC component controls the management protocol traffic and supports the management protocols for the TPA, for example, gRPC. It also helps to control the gRPC application and filter the gRPC traffic through MPP configuration.

RPM Signing and Verification
Cisco IOS XR supports RPM signing and signature verification for Cisco IOS XR RPM packages in the ISO and upgrade images. All RPM packages in the Cisco IOS XR ISO and upgrade images are signed to ensure cryptographic integrity and authenticity. This guarantees that the RPM packages have not been tampered with and the RPM packages are from Cisco IOS XR. The private key, used for signing the RPM packages, is created and securely maintained by Cisco.
LLDP Model Local System Information
The LLDP model local system information feature provides Open-Config (OC) Model support for LLDP. With this model, you can perform the create, modify, delete operations by using the YANG model through RPC request. For more information, see the Using Data Models chapter in Programmability Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.

ECDSA Algorithm Support
SSH is a secure method used to access the router for configuration and management. The IOS-XR supports SSHv2 with most advanced cryptographic algorithms RSA and DSA.
Now, an elliptic curve cryptography algorithm called Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) is added in IOS-XR SSHv2, which is more secure than RSA and DSA algorithms.

Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization
Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) randomizes the layout of both the operating system and application-process address space on a device, so that an attacker cannot predict the location of any particular piece of data or code. This better defends a device against exploitation of buffer overrun vulnerabilities.
This enhancement also provides support for securely running third-party applications on the Cisco IOS XR platform.
Enhancements to Programmability
Cisco IOS XR supports programmability of OC-NI Local Routing

From this release onwards address-family is a mandatory keyword for the show tech-support multicast command. The command syntax is:

Cisco ASR 9901 Router—The Cisco ASR 9901 Router is a compact high-capacity provider edge (PE) router that delivers 456 Gbps of non-blocking, full-duplex fabric capacity in a two-rack-unit (2RU) form factor. The Cisco ASR 9901 Router has an integrated route processor (RP) and 42 fixed-configuration ports, GPS input for stratum-1 clocking, building integrated timing supply (BITS) ports, and management ports.

The Cisco ASR 9901 Router supports Cisco IOS XR 64-bit releases only.

24-Port and 48-Port 10-Gigabit Ethernet/1-Gigabit Ethernet Line Cards, Consumption Model (A9K-24X10GE-1G-CM, A9K-48X10GE-1G-CM)—These line cards have 24 or 48 dual-rate ports that accept 10GE SFP+ or 1GE SFP modules. The -CM variant is the same as the -SE variant except that the -CM variant functions on Consumption Based Pricing Model supported with Smart Licensing.

The line cards A9K-4X100GE-SE/TR and A9K-8X100GE-SE/TR comply with G.8273.2 Class A performance on 100G ports without breakout. These line cards comply with G.8273.2 Class B performance with 10G breakout.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from package installation envelope (PIE) files that contain one or more software components.
Before starting the software upgrade, use the show install health command in the admin mode. This command validates if the statuses of all relevant parameters of the system are ready for the software upgrade without interrupting the system. The command is supported in Cisco IOS XR 64-bit OS.

Cisco Software Manager (CSM) application provides an intuitive user interface to manage Cisco IOS XR installations, with pre-installation and post-installation checks and reports. CSM helps manage the process of software maintenance upgrades (SMUs) and service packs (SPs) on devices that run the Cisco IOS XR Software.

The software upgrade to a release 6.7.x and later versions fails due to unresolved software API dependencies. The issue is seen on the ASR 9000 router series running Cisco IOS XR 32-bit release 6.4.1 or lower than release 6.3.3. To resolve the issue, you should first upgrade to any of these versions:
Later, upgrade to a release 6.7.x. Alternatively, you can directly upgrade by performing a turboboot to 6.7.x. |

Resolving Upgrade File Issues
