Cisco IOS XR Release 6.5.1 is a limited availability (LA) release. All Cisco IOS XR Release 6.5.1 features are available in Cisco IOS XR Release 6.5.2, which is a general availability (GA) release. Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000 Series) deliver unprecedented scale, service flexibility, and high availability for service providers’ fixed and mobile networks, data centers, and transport networks. The routers are powered by Cisco IOS XR Software, an innovative, self-healing, distributed operating system designed for always-on operation while scaling system capacity into multiple terabits per second (Tbps).

Cisco IOS XR Software is a distributed operating system designed for continuous system operation combined with service flexibility and higher performance.
From Release 6.1.1 onwards, Cisco introduces support for the 64 bit Linux-based IOS XR operating system. Extensive feature parity is maintained between legacy 32 bit and new 64 bit environments.
For information on operational enhancements introduced in new 64 bit IOS XR OS, refer to the Introduction to Operational Enhancements in Cisco IOS XR guide.

Software Features Introduced in this Release
Address Pool Usage Synchronisation in BNG Geo Redundant Active-Active nodes
Address pool usage synchronisation in BNG geo redundant active-active nodes enables the use of the same address pool for multiple active-active Subscriber Redundancy Groups (SRG) in a BNG geo redundancy deployment. And hence it reduces the operational overhead of maintaining separate address-pools for the different SRG groups.

IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) 315 Format
Internet Protocol Flow Information Export (IPFIX) is an IETF standard export protocol (RFC 7011) for sending IP flow information. Cisco ASR 9000 Router supports IPFIX 315 format to export flow information. IPFIX 315 feature facilitates sending ‘n’ octets frame information starting from ethernet header till trasport header of the traffic flow over the network. Along with the ethernet frame information, this feature facilitates exporting incoming and outgoing interface information of the sampled packet.
The information of the packets flowing through a device is used for variety of purpose including network monitoring, capacity planning, traffic management, etc.

Global LLDP Knob to Enable LLDP Configuration
Earlier, in IOS-XR platforms, LLDP was enabled only with global LLDP configuration and administrators had to manually disable each interface.
With this feature, you can now enable the global LLDP configuration per-interface basis. To enable the feature, you must make the necessary configuration changes. For more information on the feature, see the Interface and Hardware Component Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
Flex LSP Interworking
Flex LSPs are instances where the forward and the reverse direction paths are setup, monitored, and protected independently and associated together during signalling. The current Cisco IOS XR implementation of flex LSP uses the RSVP protection object. Hence, Cisco IOS XR Flex LSPs cannot traverse routers that do not support the RSVP protection object. So it is desirable to use an optional object instead of the RSVP protection object.
The flex LSP interworking feature enhances the IOS XR implementation of flex LSPs and provides an option to to stop using the RSVP protection object to make it interoperate with IOS XE.

Enhanced Object Tracking
This feature enhances the object tracking function to implement the interface error-disable action that is based on the status changes of a track configuration. If you error-disable an interface based on the state of a track, you can optionally auto-recover the interface when the track state changes to the original state. This feature helps us to track objects more efficiently and enables us to error-disable and auto-recover an interface based on status of a track configuration.

New commands added to CMP shell
New commands are added to the Console Management Port (CMP) shell to enhance accessibility to the console, and facilitate remote management of the router.

MACSec Support on Cisco ASR 9901 Routers
MACSec is supported on the Cisco ASR 9901 Routers running Cisco IOS XR 64-bit operating systems. MACsec is a Layer 2 IEEE 802.1AE standard for encrypting packets between two MACSec-capable routers.

Service cli submode-exit Configuration
XR-VM supported a global configuration to exit service cli submode on all configuration session for all Virtual Terminal Type lines (VTY) earlier. But, you would need a knob to enable this feature specific to a VTY.
Cisco IOS XR now supports a configuration to exit service cli submode on all interactive configuration sessions for each VTY using terminal commands. The command, terminal cli submode-exit lets you enable or disable submode-exit on all interactive configuration sessions for each VTY. You can use the show cli submode-exit status command to check the status of the configuration.
Multiple PTP Profile Interoperability
Communication between two different profiles was not possible previously due to various factors like, drop in packets or incompatible domain numbers, BMCA, or clock-class. For example, the domain number for G.8275.1 profile (24) is incompatible with the domain number for G.8275.2 profile (44).
Multiple PTP Profile Interoperability feature lets you develop a configuration to communicate with a peer device running a different PTP profile than the profile that is configured on the source router. Packets are converted on ingress/egress so that it is acceptable to the profile configured on the receiving device. This prevents packet loss and allows comparison of clocks running different profiles. A new command, interop has been introduced in this release to enable this feature.

RPF Vector Encoding
RPF vector is a PIM proxy that lets core routers without RPF information forward join and prune messages for external sources (for example, a MPLS-based BGP-free core, where the MPLS core router is without external routes learned from BGP). The RPF vector encoding is now compatible with the new IETF encoding. Use the rpf-vector use-standard-encoding command to enable the feature.

NETCONF Install YANG Actions
Traditionally, install operations are executed using CLIs, which require access to the routers. The NETCONF protocol is designed to automate the CLI executions for install operations, and address the shortcomings where the router access is required by implementing RPC mechanism.

PD Support for Optics Type and Rev Number

Automatic Line Card Reload on FPD Upgrade
This feature automatically reloads a newly inserted line card (LC) after a successful FPD upgrade. The current auto FPD upgrade process does not reload the line card automatically, the user had to manually reload the LC. To enable this feature on:

Cisco IOS XR 32-bit operating system, use the fpd auto-reload command

Cisco IOS XR 64-bit operating system, use the fpd auto-reload enable command.
This feature is supported on the second and third generation of the ASR 9000 Series Ethernet LCs.

Proactive Line Card Shut Down
The proactive line card shutdown feature enables powering down line cards automatically when the power that is drawn by the router exceeds configured threshold. The sequence of powering down LCs is based on the shutdown priorities that are assigned to them. The LC, however, does not boot automatically even after the router power draw is back to normal below the shutdown threshold. Therefore, you must manually bring up the LC by either reloading or OIR method.
Instead of provisioning more power to the router in worst case power draw scenarios, this feature helps in saving power by powering down the LC.

Persistent Interface Shutdown
Prior to Cisco IOS XR Release 6.5.1, the configurations committed in a newly created interface are lost when:
-
you do not issue no shutdown command to remove the default shutdown config, and
-
you issue no shutdown command and reload the router.
From Release 6.5.1, onwards, automatic shutdown config behavior is persistent and configurations are intact whether or not the default shhutdown config is removed and even if the router is reloaded.

Bidirectional Forwarding Detection over Generic Routing Encapsulation
Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) over Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) feature enables detection of network failures more rapidly than existing GRE keepalives mechanisms. BFD establishes a session over the GRE tunnel whose end points are BFD peers. Though BFD brings down tunnel during failure detection, Tunnel keepalive mechanism enables the recovery of the tunnel after fault clearance. BFD is supported only on tunnel mode IPv4 GRE.

MVPN Profile 26 for Pseudowire Headend
The MVPN Profile 26 for Pseudowire Headend feature adds support for multicast VPN (MVPN) profile 26 on pseudowire headend (PWHE) interface to provide multicast services. Profile 26 is a next-generation MVPN profile that carries multicast traffic encapsulated in MPLS packets. The traffic is forwarded with MPLS labels using Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) MPLS Traffic Engineering (TE) as the core signaling protocol. BGP is used as the overlay signaling protocol for partitioned multicast distribution trees (MDTs). Profile 26 represents partitioned-P2MP-TE with BGP C-multicast routing.

BGP Session Authentication and Integrity using TCP Authentication Option
BGP Session Authentication and Integrity using TCP Authentication Option feature enables you to use stronger message authentication codes that protect against replays, even for long-lived TCP connections.
It supports current infrastructure uses of TCP MD5, such as to protect long-lived connections, for example, as used in BGP. This feature supports a larger set of message authentication codes with minimal other system and operational changes.
This feature is compatible with both a static Master Key Tuple (MKT) configuration or an external, out-of-band MKT management mechanism. In either case, using traffic keys derived from the MKT, this feature also protects connections when using the same MKT across repeated instances of a connection, and it coordinates MKT changes between endpoints.

Performance Measurement and Delay Variation
Network performance data such as packet loss, delay and delay variation, and bandwidth utilization is a critical measure for Traffic Engineering (TE). This data provides service providers the characteristics of their networks for performance evaluation that is required to ensure the Service Level Agreements (SLAs).The performance measurement and delay variation feature allow you to measure those metrics and advertise them through IGP extensions as extended TE metrics.

Global Weighted SRLG Protection
A shared risk link group (SRLG) is a set of links sharing a common resource and hence shares the same risk of failure. The current implementation of SRLG protection considers only the directly connected links. Hence, if the router that computes the backup path includes a link that is not directly connected but shares the same SRLG, the SRLG protection fails. The global weighted SRLG protection feature provides better path selection for the SRLG by associating a weight with the SRLG value and using the weights of the SRLG values while computing the backup path.

SRG support for LC Subscribers
This feature enables Subscriber Redundancy Group (SRG) support for BNG line card (LC) subscriber sessions. This feature ensures that if there is any access link failure or a complete LC node failure, the end user services are not impacted.

HTTP Header Enrichment for BNG Subscribers
HTTP header enrichment for BNG subscribers enables you to intercept and enrich the HTTP GET requests with custom HTTP headers and then forward the enriched HTTP GET request to the original destination server. The server can then decode the additional subscriber and BNG information provided in the HTTP header in order to decide whether to allow or deny the request.

HTTP-Redirect for Static sessions
This feature enables you to intercept HTTP GET requests sent by a broadband subscriber and redirect them to a preconfigured URL instead of the original destination. Once the subscriber is authenticated, all HTTP traffic from the subscriber is forwarded without redirection. With this feature, it is also possible to allow access to a set of pre-configured permitted destinations without redirection.

ISSU support for Multichassis Link Aggregation
In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) for Cisco IOS XR 64-bit operating system is supported with Multichassis Link Aggregation. This feature enables the software upgrade of the router while packet forwarding continues.

SyncE Offload on nV System with the Host Running Cisco IOS XR 64-bit Operating System
This feature enables you to configure Synchronous Ethernet (syncE) offload on an nV system which has a host router running Cisco IOS XR 64-bit operating system. This feature provides frequency synchronization from the host to the satellites, and from the satellites to downstream devices.

Unified Session History for BNG Subscriber Sessions
This feature provides the capability to process and store the events that has occurred in the subscriber session lifecycle in a central storage on a per-subscriber basis. It also provides the means to access the logs from a set of different keys which uniquely identify the subscriber session. Bringing such information together in a single place at the scale handled by BNG provides an effective way for debugging issues.
SRG support for BNG Static Sessions
SRG support for BNG static sessions enables Subscriber Redundancy Group support for static interface sessions wherein all traffic belonging to a particular VLAN sub-interface is treated as a single session. This feature ensures a seamless traffic flow for static sessions in the event of a BNG switchover.

Purge Originator Identification TLV for IS-IS
At present, an IS-IS purge does not contain any information to identify the Intermediate System (IS) that generates the purge. This makes it difficult to locate the source IS.
To address this issue, the Purge Originator Identification (POI) TLV for IS-IS feature defines a type, length, and value (TLV) that can be added to the purges, to record the system ID of the IS that had initiated the purge. This makes it easier to locate the origin of the purge and its cause. If you are using cryptographic authentication, then the enable-poi keyword in lsp-password command must be enabled to insert the Purge Originator Identification (POI). If you are not using cryptographic authentication, then the POI is inserted by default. This TLV is also helpful in lab environments.

Telemetry over gNMI subscribe RPC
Cisco IOS XR supports Google network management interface (gNMI) protocol in dial-in mode where the client establishes a connection to the router. gNMI is an unified mangement protocol for streaming telemetry data using OpenConfig RPC framework. This framework and protocol does not need explicit configuration, but simplifies telemetry configuration on the router by only starting the gRPC server.
In addition, support is provided for transport layer security (TLS) ciphers in gRPC session. Two new gRPC configuration parameters
max-streams
and max-streams-per-user
are provided to stream only the gRPC-specific requests.

OSPF Authentication with Keychain
OSPF Authentication with Keychain feature enables the support of Hashed Message Authentication Code (HMAC) during OSPF authentication. New crypto algorithms such as, HMAC-SHA-256 and HMAC-SHA1-96 are added under key-chain infra as part of this feature. These algorithms provide more secured authentication.
Keychains can be configured at different levels of OSPF like at the router level, or the area level, or the interface level.

Minimum Remaining Lifetime for IS-IS
The Minimum Remaining Lifetime for IS-IS feature helps to maintain the stability of the network when the Remaining Lifetime field in a Link State Protocol (LSP) is corrupted. Corruption of the Remaining Lifetime field in a LSP data unit can go undetected. In certain scenarios, this may cause or exacerbate flooding of LSPs. This feature resolves this problem by enabling IS-IS to reset the Remaining Lifetime value of the received LSP, to the maximum LSP lifetime (1200 seconds), if the Remaining Lifetime value of the received LSP is less than the maximum LSP lifetime configured in a local node. If the received LSP lifetime value is less than the Zero Age Lifetime (60 seconds), IS-IS generates an error message indicating that it’s a corrupted lifetime event.
IS-IS saves the received Remaining Lifetime value in LSP database. The value is shown in the show isis database command output under the Rcvd field.

IS-IS Authentication with Keychain
IS-IS Authentication with Keychain feature enables the support of Hashed Message Authentication Code (HMAC) and Cipher-based Message Authentication Code (CMAC) during IS-IS authentication. New cryptographic algorithms such as, AES-128-CMAC-96, HMAC-SHA-256, and HMAC-SHA1-96 are added under Keychain infra as part of this feature. These algorithms provide more secured authentication.
Keychains can be configured at the router level (in case of the lsp-password command) and at the interface level (in case of the hello-password command) within IS-IS. These commands refer to the global keychain configuration and instruct the IS-IS protocol to obtain security parameters from the global set of configured keychains.

Replace Installed Files with Golden ISO
Golden ISO (GISO) upgrades to a version that has a predefined list of software maintenance update (SMUs) with a single operation.
However, to update to the same version with a different set of SMUs requires a two-step process. This two-step process can
be avoided using the install update replace
functionality to replace the currently active version with the full package including the image and SMUs from the newly added
GISO.

NRSSVR Process Infra Hardening on Repeated Configuration Commits
This feature provides resolution to prevent RDSFS process crash, and memory leakage at Name Registration Service (NRS) and Replicated Data Services File System (RDSFS) Server due to large number of configuration commits. To achieve this, nrs_purge API is enhanced to purge the NRS handles for files that are already deleted. This resolution provides significant improvements in the following aspects:

Enables a large number of configuration commits, without any issues
-
Ensures lower memory consumption for NRS server and RDSFS processes.
-
Prevents the need to reload the router when it has to recover from the following scenarios:
-
Continuous restarting or crashing of RDSFS processes
-
Not being able to commit any configurations
-
Enhancements to ZTP
The following enhancements are introduced in Release 6.5.1:
-
During the fresh boot, to establish a secured connection with DHCP server, authentication is performed on data ports through DHCP option 43 for IPv4 and option 17 for IPv6. These DHCP options are defined in option space and included within dhcpd.conf/dhcpd6.conf configuration files.
-
During the fresh boot of a router auto ZTP process is initiated from the management port and switches to data port when:
-
ZTP does not find an active interface,
-
delay in DHCP response, and
-
ZTP encounters an error.
Note
The auto breakout mode is not supported.

During fresh boot of the router or manual invocation of ZTP, IPv6 is enabled on all dataports (in dataport mode). The exception is for ASR 9000 as it requires IPv6 enabled on management interface (in mangement mode).

The log file ztp.log is saved in /var/log folder, and a copy of log file is available at /disk0:/ztp/ztp.log location using a soft link. However, executing ztp clean command clears files saved on disk and not on /var/log folder where current ZTP logs are saved. In order to have a log from current ZTP run, you must manually clear the ZTP log file from /var/log/ folder.

When ZTP process encounters any error, or when ZTP quits or terminates, it reverts to the initial configuration that exists before starting of ZTP process.

IS-IS Distribute List
This feature allows users to specify a filter based on destination prefix list or route policy, and use that filter to prevent routes computed by Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS) from being installed in the Routing Information Base (RIB).
When distribute-list in command is configured, some routes that IS-IS computes are not installed in the forwarding plane of the local router, but other IS-IS routers will not be aware of this. This introduces a difference between the forwarding state computed by other IS-IS routers and the actual forwarding state on this router. In some cases, this could lead to traffic being dropped or looped. Hence, be careful about when to use this command.

From this release onwards the interface tunnel-te tunnel-id path-option pref {dynamic|explicit} segment-routing command is deprecated. Configure Segment Routing Traffic Engineering (SR-TE) using the segment-routing traffic-eng command.

From this release onwards the stitching-rt command is deprecated under EVPN EVI for VxLAN.
You can configure stitching under VNI. For example:

RPKI Prefix Validation
Starting from Cisco IOS XR Release 6.5.1, origin-as validation is disabled by default, you must enable it per address family.

Hardware Enhancements Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software 6.5.1
This release introduces following hardware enhancements:

Support for 1GE SFP optics modules for single-fiber bidirectional applications on the NCS 5001 and NCS 5002 routers. The bidirectional SFP optics modules operate on a single strand of standard SMF. The communication over a single strand of fiber is achieved by separating the transmission wavelength of the two devices.

The MOD-200 consumption-model (A9K-MOD200-CM) is supported on the Cisco IOS XR 64 bit with the following MPAs:

The QSFP-100G-ER4L-S optics module is supported on the A99-12X100GE Line Card—The Cisco QSFP100 ER4-Lite module supports link lengths of up to 40km over a standard pair of G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC connectors. The 100 Gigabit Ethernet signal is carried over four wavelengths. Multiplexing and demultiplexing of the four wavelengths are managed within the device. Full 40km reach requires the use of FEC on the host platform. Without FEC, the reach is 30km. The QSFP100 ER4-Lite provides backward compatibility with Cisco’s CPAK ER4-Lite, whose reach is up to 25km, and with IEEE 100GBASE-ER4 standardized transceivers, such as Cisco’s CFP 100G ER4, up to 30km. It also interoperates with Cisco’s QSFP100 and CPAK IEEE 100GBASE-LR4 modules up to 10km.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from package installation envelope (PIE) files that contain one or more software components.
Before starting the software upgrade, use the show install health command in the admin mode. This command validates if the statuses of all relevant parameters of the system are ready for the software upgrade without interrupting the system. The command is supported in Cisco IOS XR 64-bit OS.

Cisco Software Manager (CSM) application provides an intuitive user interface to manage Cisco IOS XR installations, with pre-installation and post-installation checks and reports. CSM helps manage the process of software maintenance upgrades (SMUs) and service packs (SPs) on devices that run the Cisco IOS XR Software.

After upgrading to the latest release, the upgraded CHA FPD fails to activate on some of the RSP-880 TR/SE , A99-RSP TR/SE and RP2 cards even after RSP or RP is reloaded. The issue is observed in Cisco IOS XR 32-bit and Cisco IOS XR 64-bit image. The show hw-module fpd command output from the Cisco IOS XR 64-bit image displays the device status as Reload Req. However, there is no functionality impact seen during the normal operation of the router. Please install the following SMUs and force upgrade CHA FPDs:

Clear the NVGEN cache:
