Software
EVPN Port-Active Multihoming
The EVPN Port-Active Multhoming feature supports single-active redundancy load balancing at the port-level or at the interface-level. You can use this feature when you want to forward the traffic to a specific interface, rather that have a per-flow load balancing across multiple PE routers. This feature provides a faster convergence during a link failure. This feature enables protocol simplification as only one of the physical ports is active at a given time. You can enable this feature only on bundle interfaces.
Support for ACL Compression on Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet Line Cards
You can configure object-group ACLs to classify users, devices, or protocols into groups to enable you to have a group-level access control policy. Object-group ACLs are more readable and easier to manage than conventional ACLs and using them instead of conventional ACLs optimizes the storage needed in TCAM. This features allows you to configure object-group ACLs on Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet Line Cards.
OC-System Data Model for Network Programmability
The OpenConfig (OC) data models are defined by the OC community to create configuration and retreive operational state data
of the network. This release introduces support for the oc-system
data model to manage system-wide services and functions on network devices. Use this data model to configure and retrieve
operational state data of the system. This includes components such as AAA, system logging, alarms, gRPC, NTP and SSH.

BGP Graceful Restart Helper Mode Preemption
The following changes and enhancements have been made to BGP Graceful Restart:

Helper Mode Preemption. In the current implementation, if a BGP session is already established with a neighbor and the neighbor requests a new session, the new session is accepted if graceful restart is configured for that neighbor on the local BGP speaker. There must also be one AFI/SAFI in the Graceful Restart Capability in the OPEN message received from that neighbor's existing session; otherwise, the old session is retained.
Helper Mode Preemption removes the condition that requires at least one AFI/SAFI in the Graceful Restart Capability in the OPEN message that’s received from that neighbor's existing session. Now, if a BGP session is already established and the same neighbor requests a new session, the new session is accepted if graceful restart is configured for that neighbor on the local BGP speaker. Otherwise, the old session is retained.

The minimum bgp graceful-restart purge-time has been changed to 0. If the purge-time is configured to 0 when the BGP process on the local BGP speaker goes down, the local speaker immediately purges the BGP routes from its routing information base (RIB). In addition, the local BGP speaker will not include Address Family Identifiers (AFI) or Subsequent Address Family Identifiers (SAFI) in graceful restart capability announcements. Neighbor routes are retained.

The bgp graceful-restart retain-nbr-routes disable command is introduced. In the current implementation, when a BGP session goes down, the routes are preserved and marked as stale for every address family for which an AFI/SAFI exists in the Graceful Restart Capability received in the BGP OPEN Message from that neighbor. Now, when a BGP neighbor session goes down, and it is not configured for graceful-restart and bgp graceful-restart retain-nbr-routes disable is configured, then the local BGP speaker does not retain the routes received from that neighbor.
Inter-AS Option B Per Next-Hop Label Allocation
In an Inter-AS Option B network, ASBR peers are connected by one or more sub-interfaces that are enabled to receive MPLS traffic. ASBR allocates labels on a per-prefix basis. For each prefix received, the ASBR allocates a label. This behavior results in faster consumption of the label space in the ASBR. This feature introduces a new per next-hop label allocation method for Inter-AS Option-B networks. This allocation method allows the same ASBR label to be allocated for multiple prefixes.

BGP Flow-Tag Support
This release supports BGP Flow-Tag on Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation Line Cards.
MAP-E Support on Cisco ASR 9900 3rd Generation Line Cards
This release supports the Mapping of Address and Port using Encapsulation (MAP-E) CGN solution on Cisco ASR 9900 3rd Generation Line Cards running 64-bit IOS XR operating system.
Slow Peer Detection for Border Gateway Protocol
A slow peer is a peer that cannot keep up with the rate at which update messages are generated over a prolonged period of time due to packet loss or high traffic on the link to the peer. This feature introduces slow peer detection and handling to avoid performance issues in an update group. Slow Peer detection is enabled by default. A neighbor can be manually marked as a slow peer, or can be dynamically detected as a slow peer, and moved to a slow peer group.
Connectivity Fault Management Hardware Offload
Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) hardware offload feature allows service providers to implement connectivity monitoring at 3.3 ms and 10 ms for physical interfaces. This feature helps detecting network failure within short time and achieve high network availability for Layer 2.

Increase in Number of QinQ Subinterfaces
The number of subinterfaces per bundle interface is increased from 4096 to 8192. You can configure up to 8192 subinterfaces that includes both L2 and L3 subinterfaces. This enhancement is applicable for Cisco ASR 9000 3rd generation Ethernet line cards, Cisco ASR 9000 4th generation Ethernet line cards, and Cisco ASR 9000 5th generation Ethernet line cards.

Support for IOS XR Embedded Packet Tracer on Cisco ASR 9000 Line Cards
Embedded Packet Tracer is supported on Cisco ASR 9000 3rd Generation line cards, Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation QSFP28 based dense 100GE line cards, and Cisco ASR 9000 5th Generation line cards. It enables you to monitor the packet information through the router, find where packets have dropped or last seen, and thus helps you to efficiently troubleshoot traffic drops.
Hardware
This release introduces the following hardware:

32-Port 100GE QSFP28/QSFP+ Line Card (5th Generation)—The ASR 9900 Series 5th Generation 32-port 100 Gigabit Ethernet Line Card deliver industry-leading high density, with line-rate 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports, to any slot of a Cisco ASR 9900 Series Aggregation Services Router. The ASR 9900 Series 32-port 100 Gigabit Ethernet line card is fully compatible with Cisco ASR 9904 Router, ASR 9906 Router, ASR 9910 Router, ASR 9912 Router, and ASR 9922 Router.
This card is available in service edge optimized (A99-32X100GE-X-SE) and packet transport optimized (A99-32X100GE-X-TR) variants.
The service-edge-optimized line card is designed for customer deployments requiring enhanced service scale. The packet-transport-optimized line card is designed for customer deployments requiring basic service scale.

ASR 9000 2T and 800G Combo Line Card (5th Generation)—The Cisco ASR 9000 Series 5th Generation High-Density Multi-Rate Line Cards deliver industry-leading high density, with line-rate 100, 200, and 400 Gigabit Ethernet ports, to any slot of a Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router. This line card has flexible interfaces that support 400 Gigabit Ethernet, 200 Gigabit Ethernet, 100 Gigabit Ethernet, 40 Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet modes.
The 2T and 800G combo line cards are available in service edge optimized and packet transport optimized variants.

MACSec support will be available in a future version of the following ASR 9000 5th Generation High-Density Multi-Rate Line Cards: A9K-20HG-FLEX-xx and A9K-8HG-FLEX-xx.

Select ASR 9000 5th Generation High-Density Multi-Rate Line Cards (A9K-20HG-FLEX-xx and A9K-8HG-FLEX-xx), will support PTP Telecom Profile G.8275.2 in combination with transit G.8265.1/ G.8275.2 packets, in a future version of these cards.

Repetitive Smart Licensing evaluation expired warning messages are displayed on the console every hour, but there is no functionality impact observed on the device. To stop these repetitive messages, you should register the device again with a new registration token.

Cisco IOS XR Release 5.3.0 and later does not support the first and third generation Cisco ASR 9000 Line Cards to coexist in a single chassis.

From IOS XR Release 7.0, 1st and 2nd generation of ASR 9000 line cards are not supported.

Exceeding Cisco testing—If you intend to test beyond the combined maximum configuration tested and published by Cisco, contact your Cisco Technical Support representative to discuss how to engineer a large-scale configuration for your purpose.

Installing a Line Card—For a fully populated 40-port high density Line Card with cable optics, maintenance time required for card replacement is higher. For more information about Line Card installation and removal, refer to the Cisco ASR 9000 Aggregation Services Router Ethernet Line Card Installation Guide.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from Route Processor Module (RPM) files that contain one or more software components.
The upgrade document is available along with the software images.
Refer the ASR9K_Upgrade_Downgrade_Procedure_IOSXR_Rel_7115.pdf for upgrading to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.1.15.
Before starting the software upgrade, use the show install health command in the admin mode. This command validates if the statuses of all relevant parameters of the system are ready for the software upgrade without interrupting the system.

If you use a TAR package to upgrade from a Cisco IOS XR release prior to 7.x, the output of the show install health command in admin mode displays the following error messages:
You can ignore these messages and proceed with the installation operation. |

If you have mLACP/ICCP Redundancy Model setup, ensure that you upgrade the active and standby nodes to the same IOS XR version while upgrading to a newer version of the ASR 9000 router. |
Production Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs)
A production SMU is a SMU that is formally requested, developed, tested, and released. Production SMUs are intended for use in a live network environment and are formally supported by the Cisco TAC and the relevant development teams. Software bugs identified through software recommendations or Bug Search Tools are not a basis for production SMU requests.
