Release Notes for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers, IOS XR Release 7.2.1
Note |
This software release has reached end-of-life status. For more information see the End-of-Life and End-of-Sale Notices. |
The Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 6000 series router delivers outstanding network agility, packet optical convergence, and a system scale measured in petabits per second. It also facilitates the build-out of next-generation core to:
-
support elastic capacity at the lowest total ownership cost
-
deliver high-bandwidth mobile, video, and cloud services
Running the Cisco IOS XR operating system, Cisco's innovative virtualized operating environment, the Cisco NCS 6000 series router advances the concept of distributed routing and virtualization. With Cisco Virtualized IOS XR, the Cisco NCS 6000 series router brings new levels of programmability and virtualization to:
-
enhance application service offerings
-
increase provisioning speed
-
optimize network economics
The Cisco NCS 6000 series router is engineered for environmental efficiency, with the use of adaptable power consumption. The Cisco NCS 6000 series router is powered by the Cisco nPower Network Processor Units (NPU). These technologies aid the Cisco NCS 6000 series router to achieve the lowest carbon footprint in service provider routing.
The Cisco NCS 6008 router, part of the Cisco NCS 6000 series routers, is the next-generation core routing system that provides industry-leading 8 Tbps of full-duplex network bandwidth through single chassis with eight line cards per chassis.
The Cisco NCS 6008 router runs on Cisco IOS XR software with Linux as the underlying host operating system. A Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor provides a virtualized environment to independently run system administration and routing functions on separate virtual machines. This provision makes the new system versatile and robust, and provides immense flexibility for future expansion without the need for a complete system overhaul.
A multi-slice architecture of line cards enables the system to be configured in a mixed operating mode, simultaneously supporting traffic at 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps on slice-level granularity.
For a list of software caveats that apply to this Release, see the Caveats section. The caveats are updated for every release and are described at http://www.cisco.com.
What's New in Release 7.2.1
Cisco is continuously enhancing the product with every release and this section covers a brief description of key features and enhancements. It also includes links to detailed documentation, where available.
Software
Password Policy for User Secret
The Cisco IOS XR Software extends the existing password policy support for the user authentication to all types of user secret. The types of secret include Type 5 (MD5 ), 8 (SHA256 ), 9 (sCrypt ) and 10 (SHA512 ). Prior to this release, the support for a password policy was only for the Type 7 passwords. The new policy is common to both password and secret of the user. Using irreversible hashed-secrets have the benefit that the other modules in the device cannot retrieve the clear-text form of these secrets. Thus, the enhancement provides more secure secrets for the user names. This policy for user secrets is applicable for local and remote users.
For more information, see Password Policy for User Secret.
Commands introduced or modified for this feature are:
Support for In-band Telemetry Data Over gRPC Protocol
NCS6000 series routers support streaming telemetry on management interfaces. From Cisco IOS XR, release 7.2.1 and later, model-driven telemetry (MDT) can be streamed out-of-band using physical interfaces of the line cards on the router. The gRPC in-band support for streaming telemetry is supported only in the dial-in mode.
You can specify the IP address of the physical interface in addition to that of the supported management interface. In-band support increases the bandwidth for streaming telemetry on the router from 1G (of management interface) to the bandwidth of the physical interface. MDT supports in-band telemetry to enhance bandwidth using gRPC as the underlying protocol. The support is provided for default VRF; IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
To stream telemetry using gRPC, see Monitor Network Parameters Using Telemetry Data for Proactive Analysis.
Per-Flow Automated Steering
Currently, the steering of traffic through a Segment Routing (SR) policy is based on the candidate paths of that policy. For a given policy, a candidate path specifies the path to be used to steer traffic to the policy’s destination. The policy determines which candidate path to use based on the candidate path’s preference and state. The candidate path that is valid and has the highest preference is used to steer all traffic using the given policy. This type of policy is called a Per-Destination Policy (PDP).
Per-Flow Automated Traffic Steering introduces a way to steer traffic on an SR policy based on the attributes of the incoming packets, called a Per-Flow Policy (PFP). A PFP provides up to 8 "ways" or options to the endpoint. With a PFP, packets are classified by a classification policy and marked using internal tags called forward classes (FCs). The FC setting of the packet selects the “way”. For example, this “way” can be a traffic-engineered SR path, using a low-delay path to the endpoint. The FC is represented as a numeral with a value of 0 to 7.
For more information, see Per-Flow Automated Steering.
4+1 Cisco NCS 6000 Multi-Chassis System with ECP
The 4+1 Cisco NCS 6000 multi-chassis system with ECP consists of four line card chassis (LCC) and one fabric card chassis (FCC), interconnected with ECP.
This multi-chassis configuration provides an aggregate bandwidth of 32 Tbps (with first generation line cards) and 64 Tbps (with 2T line cards).
When the 4+1 Cisco NCS 6000 multi-chassis system is used with the ECP (External Control Plane), users can create up to 8 SDRs (secure domain routers).
For details about the 4+1 Cisco NCS 6000 Multi-Chassis System with ECP feature, see the Cisco Network Convergence System 6000 Series Routers Migration Guide.
QoS on Pseudo-wire Head End (PWHE) Egress
This release introduces the QoS on Pseudo-wire Head End (PWHE) feature on egress that enables enhanced L3VPN and L2VPN service on a service-provider-edge router.
For details about the QoS on PWHE feature on egress feature, see QoS on Pseudo-wire Head End (PWHE) Egress.
IPv6 over GRE support
Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) is a tunneling protocol that provides a simple generic approach to transport packets of one protocol over another protocol by means of encapsulation using an IPv6 address.
For more information, see the chapter Configuring Static GRE.
Commands introduced for this feature are:
FEC Support on NCS 6000 Interfaces
Forward Error Correction (FEC) is supported on NCS 6000 interfaces.
The FEC support on NCS 6000 allows you to enable or disable RS-FEC ( Reed-Solomon Codec for Ethernet IEEE 802.3 Clause 91) for optics. These optics can operate in both FEC and non-FEC mode. In the FEC mode, these optics can cover an extended range.
FEC is only supported on these optics
-
QSFP-100G-ER4L-S
-
CPAK-100G-ER4F
For more information on FEC, see the Forward Error Correction topic in the Interface and Hardware Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
Timer Delay Enhancement in BGP
The maximum configurable timer delay for transition of a track to up or down state is enhanced. In this release, the delay timer value is in the range of 0 to 3600 seconds.
Behavior Change Introduced
Behavior change refers to any modification of an existing software feature, configuration, or a command. This release introduces following behavior change:
Guidelines for Enabling FIPS
You must follow these guidelines while enabling FIPS mode:
-
You must configure the session with a FIPS-approved cryptographic algorithm. A session configured with non-approved cryptographic algorithm for FIPS (such as, MD5 and HMAC-MD5) does not work. This is applicable for OSPF, BGP, RSVP, ISIS, or any application using key chain with non-approved cryptographic algorithm, and only for FIPS mode (that is, when crypto fips-mode command is configured).
-
If you are using any HMAC-SHA algorithm for a session, then you must ensure that the configured key-string has a minimum length of 14 characters. Otherwise, the session goes down. This is applicable only for FIPS mode.
-
If you try to execute the telnet configuration on a system where the FIPS mode is already enabled, then the system rejects the telnet configuration.
-
If telnet configuration already exists on the system, and if FIPS mode is enabled later, then the system rejects the telnet connection. But, it does not affect the telnet configuration as such.
-
It is recommended to configure the crypto fips-mode command first, followed by the FIPS-related commands in a separate commit. The list of commands related to FIPS with non-approved cryptographic algorithms are:
-
key chain key-chain-name key key-id cryptographic-algorithm MD5
-

Minimum Firmware Requirement
The following table provides the procedures and resources for minimum firmware requirements:
After completing an Return Material Authorization (RMA), upgrade the firmware as per the matrix in this link, which also links to PDF copies of the IOS XR Firmware Upgrade Guides |
|
For the upgrade procedure, see the Performing System Upgrade and Installing Feature Packages chapter of the Cisco NCS 6008 System Setup and Software Installation Guide |

Other Important Information
-
To uniquely identify a line card as a Cisco device, all Cisco IOS XR supported platforms are shipped with a non-tamper-able Trust Anchor Module (TAM) in the hardware. The Cisco Trust Anchor module (TAm) helps verify that Cisco hardware is authentic and provides additional security services. This feature is supported from Cisco IOS XR Release 7.1.x on Cisco NCS 6000 platform.
-
From Release 6.0, the onePK toolkit is not supported.
-
Country-specific laws, regulations, and licenses—In certain countries, use of these products may be prohibited and subject to laws, regulations, or licenses, including requirements applicable to the use of the products under telecommunications and other laws and regulations; customers must comply with all such applicable laws in the countries in which they intend to use the products.
-
BFD limitation—If the current PPS (packets per second) is more than 7000 packets per line card (LC) then on upgrading the Cisco IOS XR software to release 5.2.5 or later the BFD sessions may shut down. You can avoid this scenario by adjusting the PPS per LC so that the load on a LC does not exceed more than 7000 PPS.
To know the current load (PPS value), use show bfd summary command. Use the bfd address-family ipv4 minimum-interval command to configure BFD timer.
-
Field replacable unit (FRU) removal—For all card removal and replacement (including fabric cards, line cards, fan controller, and RP) follow the instructions provided by Cisco to avoid impact to traffic. See the Cisco Network Convergence System 6000 Series Routers Hardware Installation Guide for procedures.
-
Exceeding Cisco testing—If you intend to test beyond the combined maximum configuration tested and published by Cisco, contact your Cisco Technical Support representative to discuss how to engineer a large-scale configuration for your purpose.

A production SMU is a SMU that is formally requested, developed, tested, and released. Production SMUs are intended for use in a live network environment and are formally supported by the Cisco TAC and the relevant development teams. Software bugs identified through software recommendations or Bug Search Tools are not a basis for production SMU requests.
For information on production SMU types, refer the Production SMU Types section of the IOS XR Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs) guide.
