Upgrading the OS and Features
You can upgrade the version of Cisco IOS XR on a router, from the XR VM. However, during system upgrade, the version of IOS XR that runs on both the XR VM and the System Admin VM is upgraded.
From Release 6.3.1 onwards, NCS 6000 supports the use of a composite RPM file for upgrading each, the XR VM and the System Admin VM. RPM is a Linux open standard packaging format that simplifies the dependency management of upgrade components, such as SMUs and packages. The RPM metadata and version helps to manage the SMUs. By using Linux-based RPM format for packages, you can enable asynchronous upgrade of packages and off-box development of tools.
