The Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 6000 series router delivers outstanding network agility, packet optical convergence, and a system scale measured in petabits per second. It also facilitates the build-out of next-generation core to:
-
support elastic capacity at the lowest total ownership cost
-
deliver high-bandwidth mobile, video, and cloud services
Running the Cisco IOS XR operating system, Cisco's innovative virtualized operating environment, the Cisco NCS 6000 series router advances the concept of distributed routing and virtualization. With Cisco Virtualized IOS XR, the Cisco NCS 6000 series router brings new levels of programmability and virtualization to:
-
enhance application service offerings
-
increase provisioning speed
-
optimize network economics
The Cisco NCS 6000 series router is engineered for environmental efficiency, with the use of adaptable power consumption. The Cisco NCS 6000 series router is powered by the Cisco nPower Network Processor Units (NPU). These technologies aid the Cisco NCS 6000 series router to achieve the lowest carbon footprint in service provider routing.
The Cisco NCS 6008 router, part of the Cisco NCS 6000 series routers, is the next-generation core routing system that provides industry-leading 8 Tbps of full-duplex network bandwidth through single chassis with eight line cards per chassis.
The Cisco NCS 6008 router runs on Cisco IOS XR software with Linux as the underlying host operating system. A Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor provides a virtualized environment to independently run system administration and routing functions on separate virtual machines. This provision makes the new system versatile and robust, and provides immense flexibility for future expansion without the need for a complete system overhaul.
A multi-slice architecture of line cards enables the system to be configured in a mixed operating mode, simultaneously supporting traffic at 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps on slice-level granularity.
This electronic documents may contain updates and modifications. For more information on obtaining Cisco documentation, see the Communications, Services, and Additional Information section.

What's New in Release 6.4.1
Cisco is continuously enhancing the product with every release and this section covers a brief description of key features and enhancements. It also includes links to detailed documentation, where available.
Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Release 6.4.1
BGP Flow-tag Propagation
BGP flow-tag propagation feature enables the corelation between route policies and user polices for steering traffic. A number of BGP attributes, such as the AS number, prefix lists, community strings, and extended communities are used for directing traffic to appropriate service provider customers. For more information, see the Understanding BGP Flow-tag Propagation section in the Routing Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
NETCONF access control enhancements
With the introduction of this feature, a new command reference, show nacm (XR-VM) and a new keyword nacmwas added. For more information, see System Security Command Reference Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Routers, IOS XR.
Collapsed Forwarding - Unicast Next-Hop
For forwarding traffic from one secure domain router (SDR) to another SDR, the existing solution was to connect the SDRs using external cables and ports. In collapsed forwarding, inter SDR traffic is handled by the internal fabric itself without requiring the external cables. This is achieved by using a point-to-point virtual interface that connects two SDRs to each other.
For more information about configuring collapsed forwarding feature, see System Management Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers, IOS XR Release 6.4.x
Multicast Collapsed Forwarding
The collapsed forwarding feature supports multicast traffic. Here is the list of multicast profiles that are supported:
-
Native Multicast
-
P2MP-TE (mid and tail) Global Table Multicast
For information on configuring collapsed forwading, see Implementing Multicast Routing on Cisco IOS XR Software chapter in the Multicast Configuration Guide for the Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers, IOS XR Release 6.4.x. For list of multicast commands, see Multicast Routing and Forwarding Commands chapter in the Multicast Command Reference for the Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
Multicast VPN with GRE
Multicast VPN (MVPN) provides the ability to dynamically provide multicast support over MPLS networks. MVPN introduces an additional set of protocols and procedures that help enable a provider to support multicast traffic in a VPN. Secure data transmission is achieved by encapsulating customer multicast packets in a provider header using GRE encapsulation.
For information on configuring MVPN, see Implementing Multicast Routing on Cisco IOS XR Software chapter in the Multicast Configuration Guide for the Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers, IOS XR Release 6.4.x. For list of multicast commands, see Multicast Routing and Forwarding Commands chapter in the Multicast Command Reference for the Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
External Control Plane
Cisco NCS 6008 supports running upto three SDRs on the same route processor (RP). With the external control plane (ECP) feature, two external servers are connected to the NCS 6008 Line Card Chassis through control Ethernet. This ensures control plane reachability across the NCS 6008 Chassis and both the servers and provides the additional system resources required to scale beyond the current limitation of three named-SDRs.
For more information about configuring ECP feature, see System Management Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
Pseudowire Headend (PWHE)
The Pseudowire Headend (PWHE) feature provides a Layer 3 (L3) virtual interface representation of a pseudowire (PW) on an service provider edge (PE), that allows the backhaul of customer packets over PWs and the application of L3 features, such as QoS (for example: policing and shaping) and access lists (ACLs) on customer packets on the PW. In Release 6.4.1, PWs operate in bridged interworking (VC type 5 or VC type 4) and IP interworking (VC type 11) modes.
For more information on this feature, see the Implementing MPLS Layer 3 VPNs chapter in the Virtual Private Network Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers, IOS XR Release 6.4.1.
RPM Signing and Verification
Cisco IOS XR supports RPM signing and signature verification for Cisco IOS XR RPM packages in the ISO and upgrade images. All RPM packages in the Cisco IOS XR ISO and upgrade images are signed to ensure cryptographic integrity and authenticity. This guarantees that the RPM packages have not been tampered with and the RPM packages are from Cisco IOS XR. The private key, used for signing the RPM packages, is created and securely maintained by Cisco.
Yang (Netconf Operational) Show CLIs
With the introduction of this feature, support for show CLIs for YANG Data Models is extended. For more information on YANG Models, see Programmability Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS6000 Routers.
NTP Authenticate Enabled by Default
This feature enables the NTP authentication by default, in order to prevent exploitable conditions from occurring when administrators enable ephemeral associations such as "ntp passive", "ntp broadcast client", or "ntp multicast client".
Check Health of System Database
New CLIs are introduced to monitor the health of the system database (SysDB).
For more information about these commands, see Performance Management Commands chapter in System Monitoring Command Reference for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
SSH and AAA Hardening
SSH and AAA offers improved serviceability and enhanced optimization in retreiving configuration and storing operational data.
For more information, see Implementing Secure Shell chapter in System Security Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers
Increase in Throttle Memory Range
The high range of memory usage per session by the XML agent is increased from 600 MB to 1024 MB. Supported only on IOS XR 64-bit OS.
For more Information about configuring the XML agent, see Configuring Manageability chapter in System Management Configuration Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
Warm Reset of Router
The warm reset feature allows users to reset the routers without accessing the previously saved copy of the image in the ROMMON. This reduces the time required to reboot the router and inturn enhances system performance.
Remove Noise when Accessing System Admin Console
The extra information that manifests as noise when logging into the System Admin mode is removed.
For more information about the command to remove this noise, see Access the System Admin LXC Console topic in Bring-up the Router chapter in System Setup and Software Installation Guide for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
Behavior Change Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Release 6.4.1
From this release onwards address-family is a mandatory keyword for the show tech-support multicast command. The command syntax is:
show tech multicast address-family <ipv4/ipv6>.
For more information, refer the show tech-support multicast command in the Tech-Support Commands chapter of the Advance System Command Reference for Cisco NCS 6000 Series Routers.
New Hardware Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.4.1

QSFP-100G-PSM4-S
-
QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S
-
QSFP-100G-SM-SR
-
Other Important Information
-
To uniquely identify a line card as a Cisco device, all Cisco IOS XR supported platforms are shipped with a non-tamper-able Trust Anchor Module (TAM) in the hardware. The Cisco Trust Anchor module (TAm) helps verify that Cisco hardware is authentic and provides additional security services. This feature is supported from Cisco IOS XR Release 7.1.x on Cisco NCS 6000 platform.
-
From Release 6.0, the onePK toolkit is not supported.
-
Country-specific laws, regulations, and licenses—In certain countries, use of these products may be prohibited and subject to laws, regulations, or licenses, including requirements applicable to the use of the products under telecommunications and other laws and regulations; customers must comply with all such applicable laws in the countries in which they intend to use the products.
-
BFD limitation—If the current PPS (packets per second) is more than 7000 packets per line card (LC) then on upgrading the Cisco IOS XR software to release 5.2.5 or later the BFD sessions may shut down. You can avoid this scenario by adjusting the PPS per LC so that the load on a LC does not exceed more than 7000 PPS.
To know the current load (PPS value), use show bfd summary command. Use the bfd address-family ipv4 minimum-interval command to configure BFD timer.
-
Field replacable unit (FRU) removal—For all card removal and replacement (including fabric cards, line cards, fan controller, and RP) follow the instructions provided by Cisco to avoid impact to traffic. See the Cisco Network Convergence System 6000 Series Routers Hardware Installation Guide for procedures.
-
Exceeding Cisco testing—If you intend to test beyond the combined maximum configuration tested and published by Cisco, contact your Cisco Technical Support representative to discuss how to engineer a large-scale configuration for your purpose.

A production SMU is a SMU that is formally requested, developed, tested, and released. Production SMUs are intended for use in a live network environment and are formally supported by the Cisco TAC and the relevant development teams. Software bugs identified through software recommendations or Bug Search Tools are not a basis for production SMU requests.
For information on production SMU types, refer the Production SMU Types section of the IOS XR Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs) guide.
