IP versión 6 (IPv6) es una nueva versión de IP diseñada para reemplazar la versión de IP 4 (IPv4), actualmente implementada y utilizada de manera masiva en todo el mundo. Las ventajas de IPv6 son principalmente el resultado de su espacio de direccionamiento mucho mayor, que es necesario para hacer frente a la expansión de Internet y a la proliferación de dispositivos compatibles con Internet.
Una VPN IPv6 se conecta a través de una interfaz o subinterfaz IPv6 a la estructura básica del proveedor de servicios (SP) a través de un router PE. El sitio puede ser compatible con IPv4 e IPv6. Cada VPN IPv6 tiene su propio espacio de dirección, lo que significa que una dirección dada denota diferentes sistemas en diferentes VPN. Esto se logra a través de una nueva familia de direcciones, familia de direcciones VPN-IPv6 o familia de direcciones VPNv6, que precede a un Distinguidor de ruta (RD) a la dirección IP.
Una dirección VPNv6 es una cantidad de 24 bytes que comienza con un RD de 8 bytes y termina con una dirección IPv6 de 16 bytes. Cuando un sitio es compatible con IPv4 e IPv6, se puede utilizar el mismo RD para el anuncio de direcciones IPv4 e IPv6.
No hay requisitos específicos para este documento.
Nota: Para la compatibilidad con routing y reenvío virtual (VRF) IPv6 en algunas plataformas (por ejemplo, el router serie 7600), deberá configurar mls ipv6 vrf en la configuración global.

Cuando un router 6VPE recibe un paquete de un router CE conectado, busca la dirección de destino IPv6 del paquete en la tabla VRF correspondiente a ese router CE. Esto le permite encontrar una ruta VPNv6. La ruta VPNv6 tiene una etiqueta MPLS asociada (etiqueta superior) y una etiqueta BGP Next-Hop asociada (etiqueta inferior).
